I read a lot about the 5d mII body on this forum, but was wondering if someone can tell me a little about it's predecessor the 5d. Canon has nothing about it on the website that I can find. I have someone locally who wants to sell one but I have no idea on value or specs. Any help appreciated.

Just found this link pretty helpful.
http://www.buy.com/prod/canon-ef-400mm-f-5-6l-usm-super-telephoto-lens-f-5-6/q/sellerid/10001650/loc/111/220932634.html
Anyone with an idea of current value?

All the old reviews of that camera are still on camera review and magazine websites. Heck, I even wrote one back in the day:

Don't hesitate on picking up a nice 5D vs. a 5DII if you're on a budget. Spend the extra money on glass. I own both and can tell you the new one is just bells, whistles, and more MP...don't get me wrong it's a nice body but it's not going to capture better images for you.

If I sell mine, 1000 takes it. To me, it's worth more than three digits lol.

yea, plus 1. You dont see too many on here for less than 1k. Add a grip and the price goes up. Its still an amazing camera even though the AF is starting to show its age.

It was the 5D that enabled me to sell all my medium format film gear.

Great camera, with some feature limitations by modern standards, but if you can live with those, go for it (I'd find it hard to live without liveview now I admit)

Interesting comment, David. It was exactly the same for me. I bought a 20D in 2004, and sold off my 35mm film gear. When I bought a 5D in 2007, I sold my beautiful Fujifilm rangefimders and Shen Hao, which I mostly used with a 69 back.

You can download the 5D manual at http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/eos_slr_camera_systems/eos_digital_slr_cameras/eos_5d#BrochuresAndManuals

Look for the link EOS5DIM-EN.pdf near the bottom

It was a 'no-brainer'. I could suddenly do my work in digital with little or no penalty in image quality and huge advantages in film & processing cost, flexibility of ISO and colour balance and security - I could back up onsite and absolutely guarantee I had the shots I needed

I bought three 5D's and sold all my RB67's Hasselblads and large format gear. I will never shoot a frame of film again.

I recently picked up a gripped 5D for about $1k and I am in love with it! The DPR specs posted above are about as thorough as you could want. I am saving up to fund a 5D3 when it's out. 5D will keep me happy for a while.

I can't really say I find the AF a limitation on it. I mean, if I want more certainty, I take my 1 series, but I've got to say I've not really ever been let down to feel that way in the first place lol.

The 5D is an outstanding dslr. I am sorry I sold mine. As a landscape dslr, its images are hard to beat if not unbeatable IMHO.
Never found any AF limitations or problems. At the time of my use, I was a jpeg only guy and the out-of-camera files were crisp, clean and sharp.
My only gripe, and this gripe is with all pre-sensor cleaning auto, was constant dust.
Good luck and you can view some of my 5D images on my website.

I've had the 5D since it was introduced. There is a reason that I'm still using it and that is because of the image quality. There are no limitations with the 5D, its just that people buy one and then complain because they compare a nearly 6 year old camera with the 7D or 1DMKIII or IV AF and put a limitation on it because the AF does not compare. The only limitations with the 5D are with the person that is shooting with it. Understand the camera that you are using and you will have no complaints!

I have heard so much of the negative press about the focusing, I thought it would be noticably problematic. I expected the LCD would be awful, too. I have been pleasantly suprised at both the focusing and LCD now that I have the camera in hand.

Old reviews need to be put in a modern context. The camera remains as good as it ever was but by modern standards it is slow, has poor image review facilities, does not have a great ISO range, perhaps has inferior AF, etc. To a great extent these things are relative when it comes to deciding what is good or bad, better or worse. Our standards and expectations evolve with time.

The prints from a 5D may be every bit as good as those from any other camera, and better than many, but a modern camera is more likely to cope better with a greater range of shooting requirements. Of course many shooters do not need such a greater capability, but others do.

Alan is correct! I mistakenly sold my 5D and 1DsMKII. The IQ on both was phenominal and the lack of the the newer "bells and video whistles" and all the AF Microadjustments which put way more pressure on the sensor and processor, provided for better IQ IMHO.
I have since repurchased the 1DsMKII..am looking for another 5D now...
