The Gothic Quarter is cool (though keep in mind, it's not as old as it looks). The Gracia neighborhood should have some interesting opportunities for street photography and nice architecture. Likewise, the Barceloneta neighborhood should be good for street photography with its very narrow streets.

The various architectural spots around the city (such as Casa Batllo, Casa Mila, Parc Guell), should also be cool even with the Q2.

I'm a bit of an architecture nut, and primarly went to Barcelona to see Gaudi's work. The Sagrada Familia is his biggy, but he died while the building was just getting started. Pleanty of additional works to see, such as Parc Guell, Palau Guell, Casa Vincens and more.

The Mercat La Boqueria can be fun. Had a wonderful lunch at Bar Pinotxo there. Sat next to a kind repeat visitor that insisted on ordering, sharing and paying for some of her favorite dishes.

Palua Musica is also an incredible building, and can be visited on a tour. However, might look into seeing if there is an interesting concert at the time you visit. We saw Philip Glass play, with several of his proteges. A most excellent evening.

Great food available on almost every block. If you like wine, almost every place has a house selection, often quite good and reasonably priced.

Some great art museums too. On a rainy day, we visited Fundació Joan Miró and Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, having a wonderful time at each. The mercury fountain at Fundació Joan Miró was a source of wonder.

Don't know how long you are going to be there, but there is pleanty to see and do in Catalunya. If you like bubbly, as in champagne, then take the train down to Sant Sadurni d'Anoia, and take a couple Cava house tours. Cava is produced by the Method Champagne but using Spanish grapes. High quality versions are every bit as good as bubbly produced north of the border. Nice town too. They had a farmers market going the day we visited, and picked up some excellent cheeses and meats to keep us going.

To the north, Girona is worth a visit, also easy to get to by train. For a Costa Brava town, Cadaques is spectacular, but you would have rent a car from Girona.

Only 5 days in Barcelona then a week in Girona and some cycling there.
Thank you for the incredible wealth of information
The first and second places to go when I arrive today before my family joins me and photo conflict starts?

Jealous of cycling in Girona.

At one point, I used to be a pretty energetic cycle commuter, averaging around 80 miles during the work week, and often another 40-60 over the weekend. That all ended about 2 years prior to our Girona visit by taking a job well out of cycling range.

Probably a good time to go. I recommended Barcelonetta and the Gothic quarter. When I went in the summer some years ago, all I could find were tourists, shopkeepers, waiters and a guy protesting against the tourists. You should be luckier in March.

I am planning a trip to Barcelona this Summer too. Is it safe to use/carry a regular Q2 there as the sole camera? I am thinking about taping the red logo. Isn't it black camera is more "stealth" in general?

I actually prefer M10R or M11 more for experience and files ... but wonder if it is safe in Barcelona to use an M body and lenses.

I will be there later this year. Can you schedule another Glass concert for me? (First saw him live in the 1970s. It is a long story.)

To be honest, that was pure serendipity. A little context first.

Glass's work periodically resurfaces on my radar, typically when I'm on one of my audio benders. Much of his work has the curious ability to bore right to the very core of my being, and rattle my neurons like nothing else. Almost certainly analogous to an illicit substance, but in a positive way. Ironically, for my wife Glass's work evokes a response similar in magnitude, but in polar opposite to mine. She once threatened to jump out of our moving car when I played one of his pieces.

Knowing that, it was quite a surprise when my spouse somehow: (1) found out Glass would be playing during our visit to Barcelona, (2) he was to play at one of the places we truly wanted to visit, preferably for a concert, (3) tickets were still available at a reasonable cost, and most importantly (4) she thought we should go. Maybe she has mellowed with age, but she was as entranced with the experience as I was. A extraordinarily special evening.

Hope you enjoy Barcelona, and wherever else you might find yourself in Catalonia.

Knowing that,
...Show more

I first encountered Glass and his music as a young composition student — my mentor introduced me to his music. (In those days I also attended performances by folks like Terry Riley, Laurie Anderson, Steve Reich, John Adams, and others before they were widely known. I had a connection to synth builder Don Buchla, met Bob Moog, and more. But I digress... ;-) )

The first Glass concert I attended was a performance by the Philip Glass ensemble in the late 1970s. I was actually a bit pissed off by the incredibly loud volume — I was actually experiencing a kind of audio distortion in my ears and I had to leave. I liked the music but could not tolerate the volume. (This despite having played in a band in small, loud clubs for years...) Eventually I heard other stuff, including a performance of Satyagraha with SF Opera and also the marvelous film, "Koyaanisqatsi." Each experience caused me to reevaluate my initially simplistic notion of how his music works, and a truly marvelous experience was hearing him perform the solo piano works in concert. (I've also heard some truly forgettable stuff, including an opera about the Civil War that was performed in SF and which almost immediately dropped from view.)

Your post brings up another "travel tip" that we caught onto some years back. Well, actually, my wife gets the credit. There are often concerts in some places that you might otherwise spend hours waiting to get into. But a concert ticket — as you did — and you get in without the waiting, without the crowds, and you get to hear a concert. One of our visits to pre-fire Notre Dame was made this way, and our first visit to Sainte-Chappelle was for a concert. (Imagine our reaction, being completely ignorant of that place and arriving "to hear a concert" when we walked into it right around sunset!)

Don't forget a short rail trip to Monserrat. If you get the timing right the famous
choir might be singing. Magic photo opps and unforgettable.

It's very safe yes. Especially in the areas where tourists go.

Since this thread came back to life…

If you like photographing people street-style, La Rambla is basically one long party on busy evenings.

I liked photographing in the Gothic Quarter quite a bit, especially in the very late afternoon/early evening when things get darker but there’s still ambient light.

Sagrada Família is very much worth it. We arrived just a bit (hour? Hour and a half?) before sunset and we inside during the final hours of sunlight… which was stupendous in this space with marvelous, colorful windows. (Among the otherGaudi sites, Casa Battlo ranked high, though it was really crowded. Needless to say, get an advanced ticket to any of these places.)

beware of pickpocketers; they work in tandem in popular tourist spots.

Generally, in any such place, I prefer to be a bit discrete about my photography and not drawing attention to myself. Mostly I did not feel particularly threatened in Barcelona, though there were times when my attention level was higher.

FWIW, I work with smaller gear (most recently XT5 and the 27mm f/2.8 90% of the time) and I don’t hang camera stuff around my neck that says, “Look! Expensive camera!” I carry the camera and perhaps an extra lens or two in a non-photographic bag, these days a smaller-than-messenger-bag bag from PacSafe that is pretty secure. I often leave the camera in the bag unless I think opportunities are immediately present, and when it is out I’m using a wrist strap and mostly holding the camera down at my side — not slinging it over my shoulder where it is obvious.

So far — knock on wood — we’ve been safe… though we had a close call in Venice las summer. We were definitely being tailed by a couple of guys as we walked near the train station with all of our stuff (luggage in backpacks, and smaller bags over the shoulder and across teh chest.). I saw what was happening and made a quick move and they walked past. We continued, and moments later they were right behind us again. We immediately ducked into a restaurant and they were gone. (Apparently the routine is that a couple of guys will grab your stuff, run, and quickly hand it to someone else who escapes with it.)

But not to leave the wrong impression… last summer we traveled for 10 weeks all over the place: Spain, Portugal, Italy, Kosovo, Croatia, and more. We met tons of great, friendly people everywhere.

Don’t be paranoid, but do be alert!

I like the markets and shopping districts. Lots of people and the Spanish tend to be much more concerned about how they dress and look than what one experiences in most of the USA.

For the cathedrals I use a fisheye lens most of the time as the alternative of trying to take multiple shots on a pan and then stitch them together does not work with the range of light and dark areas of the interiors.

We are planning a fall visit to Barcelona early November. We've never stayed there overnight, but may be doing so for a few nights.

In addition to areas of the city (the above comments are helpful), anyone have any hotel recommendations, or areas of the city best for hotels for tourists? We're travelling with another couple, both he and I will have camera gear.

Our hotel preference is for something a bit on the luxe side, but still value for money. In other words, not cheap, but not Four Seasons level. An on-site restaurant is preferred.

TIA
Brian
