Is anyone else noticing the battery life is not good at all. If my camera is off and in the bag overnight I am losing 15-20%. I do have the airplane mode activated and remote control 'off'. Anyone with some ideas!
In case anyone is interested. I did get a prompt response from Sony. Not necessarily the answer I was looking for, I have tried most of these.
From Sony:
A fully charged NP-FW50 (supplied battery) can approximately take 360 images when using the LCD screen and approximately 310 images when using the viewfinder. I have included some suggestions on how you can maximize its battery life.
1. If you are not going to use the camera for a long period of time, you can remove the battery pack from the camera and store it in a cool dry place.
2. Charge the battery for another hour after the charge lamp goes out.
3. Turn the power off in between shots.
4. You can also disable the "Auto Review" function of the camera. This feature displays the recorded image right after shooting. You can access this option by:
- Press Menu.
- Go to Custom Settings (gear icon).
- Look for Auto Review.
- Select Off.
5. You can also turn off the audio signals. You can go to this setting by referring to the steps below:
- Press Menu.
- Go to Setup (toolbox icon).
- Look for Audio Signals.
- Select Off.
These are the usual general tips that we can provide to maximize your camera's battery life. If the battery still drains faster, please observe how many shots you can take using a fully charged battery and how long were you able to use it. This will allow us to determine whether or not this is a battery issue.
I put in a fresh battery last night and this morning, like 10 hours later, the charge still reads 100%. I know it doesn't help you but mine doesn't seem to drain the battery. You are using a Sony OEM battery, I believe, right?
Thanks for letting me know. Yes, all sony batteries. If I put a fresh battery in at night, it will be 85% in the morning. Everything is turned off, including the camera!
I just ordered a body, due in Wed. Ill see what mine does and report such. My NEX 7 has a Sony and two Wasabi batteries, will see how those non oem batteries do.
I have not experienced any battery loss/drain on either of my 2 OEM Sony batteries while the A6000 is turned off overnight.
I just replaced one last night and still reads @ 100%.
I do charge them with the optional external battery charger, so I'm not sure if that might effect the results.
I passed on to Photoomaha , that my A6000 battery showed 100% after a 12 hour overnight rest. I also charged that battery on my Nex 7 charger. I will test my Wasibi batteries to see if it drains them overnight.
^^ Some drain over a period of weeks is reasonable (I observe this too with my A7r) but obvious drain overnight is not.
Assuming we are talking about properly made cells, lithium ion cell technology has extremely low self-discharge rates. I use nothing but OEM packs - both Sony and Nikon use Japanese cells in their packs (Sony or Panasonic) and these are the best of the best.
Any perceptible loss of charge over just a few weeks while left in-camera will be due to the equipment they are installed in. Off doesn't always mean completely off - the A7/r cameras have an internal fixed battery which is charged by the pack. Probably that circuit isn't as efficient as it could be, but for a regular user the gradual drain isn't that big a deal. If you use the camera once a year, that might be a problem.
If an A6000 can drain a cell 20% overnight while shut off, I would not consider that normal conditions. There is something wrong with camera or pack.
In the old day with the nex7 there was a documented problem that if bags depressed the shutter button partially even while the camera was off they would drain the battery. I would try repeating the experiment with the camera sitting outside of the bag.
