p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Transcend 400X 64GB card on 7D

I've been lucky to have an opportunity to go to Africa and finally update my Safari pictures from a decade ago - man, they suck ... although I looked better back then.

While I've got some 16GB cards, I figured it would be best to have additional capacity, especially now that I'm having fun with video. So after some misc. research, I picked up a Transcend 400x 64GByte CF Card from New Egg for $195 (noticeably cheaper than Amazon BTW!) and initial indications are all positive ... pretty cool to see "999" as shots remaining when in RAW mode.

I have updated my quick-n-dirty CF Card Speed tests (which includes the Photofast 533X Plus 16GByte, which is faster) - click on the link for pics and data below - sorry it doesn't format well.

Number of frames in 5 second burst and total time to clear buffer
RAW RAW+JPEG Compact Flash
28f/12s 20f/12s PhotoFast 533X Plus 16GB
28f/20s 20f/18s Transcend 400X 64GB
25f/17s 18f/17s Transcend 300X UDMA
24f/44s 16f/40s Transcend 133X non-UDMA

P.S. I've got a brand spanking new 70-200/2.8IS2 (plus tele-extenders), so along with a 10-22 and 17-55, I should be well covered except for the very long end - anyone want to loan me their 800/5.6! ;-)

I just picked up the Trandscend 16gb version 400x. I have no complaints so far. The Newegg price I am extremely pleased. The trandscends are made in taiwan and the sandisk's are made in china. They all work but the Trandscend's price wins for good reviews and price point.

I have the 32GB/400 version. Shooting focus-stacked, HDR panoramas as fast as I can it easily keeps up with me.

I have several Transcend cards in various cameras. They all work fine. In one instance I trashed an 8GB Transcend CF by improperly formatting it in on a D2X, Transcend quickly replaced it for free. Last summer shooting HDR panos I basically filled up a 16GB SD Transcend almost every day. No problems at all. Impressive.

Be careful with that 2x extender.

said to work pretty well on the mk2 70-200 2.8
I would be interesting to get a test between that combo and the 100-400.
For :
Sharpness/IQ
Bokeh
Focus speed and accuracy
IS ability

If it did well it would make the much Higher price easier to stomach. You could get a killer 70-200 2.8 and a comparable 140-400L for a tad less than the cost of the old 70-200 and 100-400

I've been quite happy with the 2x TC on the 70-200/2.8IS2 - most of the second half of pictures taken of a nearby Great Horned Owl Nest were done with this combo ... and several used stacked 2x TC's ... i.e. 800/F11, manual focus only.

Sure, the later isn't tack sharp at the pixel level, but it ain't shabby! In terms of autofocus speed, others have much more experience than me, but from shooting kids soccer and frisbee, the bare lens is scary fast, it seemed plenty fast with the 1.4x, but yea, with the 2x TC, there was some AF slowdown, but the IQ is very nice IMHO.

P.S. And as others have said, the IS is *amazing" on the lens - this shot is at 1/250s and could have easily gone slower.

I have the 100-400 and the 70-200/4 IS. No way the 2x on the 70-200 compares favorably with the 100-400 at 400. Then there's the option of adding the 1.4 TC to the 100-400.

In a group safari vehicle the 100-400 is the right lens. It covers almost the whole range of the 70-200 with 2 TC's. A large prime is too cumbersome.

What tends to happen is the 2x goes on and stays on, producing a lot of so-so photos. I don't feel one should buy the 2x TC without a big prime. It's an expensive small "lens" and the money is better put towards a longer lens.

I only use my 2x on my 500/4. On zooms with the 2x TC micro contrast goes from fair to weird.

I think before the 70-200 f/2.8 MkII most of us would agree with you, but there have been some great examples of the 2x on that new lens that look great - much better than the MkI version. Good enough that it's possible to consider replacing a 100-400 with the new 70-200 and the 2x. There's another thread going about that now:
https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/892503

But I'm beginning to think that the AF may be unacceptably slow with the 2x unless you're using a 1DMkIII or MkIV.

I've been shooting the Transcend 64 GByte card for a while now and it's worked great. Has been especially useful when shooting lots of hi-def video of birds nesting on my front door since this remote setup would have even filled up a 16 GByte card a few times!

My 32 gig card came in today, but will have to wait to try it out in my 7d since I dropped it off at Canon this morning for a look over and to cal. a lens to it. Should get it back tomorrow...
