This is a great landscape lens with good sharpness and contrast. I've used it on a XTi and a 5D. It's good on XTi and great on 5D. It's sharper from 20mm -35mm than 17-20mm. But you will not use 17-24 range very often on a full frame. The corner is not as sharp but acceptable. Overall, great lens for only $500-600.

a little bit heavy, not performing as well from 24mm-28mm

I've had 3 copies of 24-70L, 2 copies of 24-105L and 1 copy of 17-55 IS. I've done some comparison. 24-70L won easily over 24-105L on both 40D and 5D. 24-70L/5D is also better than 17-55 IS/40D. This is a nice zoom lens, sharp at 2.8, nice color and contrast. I definitely recommend it.
The downside is that it's not a good landscape lens, and it's a little heavy.
