I have the non USM version of the lens for some 8 years now. It's always in my camera bag and i would not miss it. The images taken are of reasonable quality even at 300mm. Good value for the money.

Pros:

Really fast auto focus, build quality for the given price. Good range on FF.

|
Cons:
|
Some distortion at 28mm

After some steps over lower quality consumer lenses I ended up with this one. The build quality is resonable. If you have a short budget go for the lens. One of best values for little money from Canon.

I bought the lens on a trip to Australia in 2001 when i realised that i need a wider angle to capture the landscape. It served me well for some years with really great shots. Regarding the price i would by it again.
The lens was orginally designed as the standard zoom on the SLR-APS cameras of the IX line. But it performs well on a 35mm film body.

I'm always impressed of the resulting images with this lens. It's most time on my camera. I change to other lenses only when i need a different field of view.

I have the lens since April 2005. I use it on a 35mm body. You need to know what you are doing at the 12mm end. But you can get really stuning results. My copy is sharp to the edges (check with 4000 dpi film scanner Nikon V ED).
