Canon EF 35mm f/2

Pros: small!, light, cheap
Cons:
could be sharper, noisy AF, AF searches in low light conditions, cheap build, IQ not brilliant

I bought this lens on eBay for 150 so very cheap. I was very happy as I finally had a perfect lens for street photography. It is very small and light so you can walk around the city for whole day without feeling your neck. It has perfect focal lenght on crop body (almost 50mm). Image quality is not that brilliant though as well as sharpness. I would expect more from fixed focal lens. AF is noisy ('bzzzzzz' like an anoying fly) and it has problems in low light conditions. Build quality is cheap. My camera has dropped from my bag on the ground (max 10cm) and the lens broke so that the repair would cost more than it's worth.

Pros: f/2.8, cheap wide angle
Cons:
small zoom range, not sharp (see below)

I bought the lens and the same day I tested it taking architecture photos for my photography course. Here are some samples from that day:

I was very happy with the lens and my photos until I uploaded them on my laptop. I had a feeling that a lot of them where not sharp (the samples are the best that I took) so I did a big test in my house. I found that in a big magnification even at f11 the images are not sharp. I went to the shop to replace it. We did another test with the seller. The more the tested, the more I was convinced that the lens is not sharp, and the seller convinced that it is sharp Smile Finally he was very happy to take it back (he didn't have the replacement) because the lens is very popular.

Brilliant for street photography portraits. You need lots of space when shooting portraits indoor (when not on full frame).

Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical [IF]

Review Date: May 24, 2008 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 8

Pros: f/2.8, fast AF, starts from 17mm
Cons:
not sharp at f/2.8 in low light, 50mm not enough (70mm would be nice), not for full frame, IQ not perfect

I would recommend it as a first lens instead of kit but after a while you want better IQ. I prefer 20mm longer for street photography that's why I'm buying 24-70mm and this one I will use for wide angle.
