It may sound odd, but this lens replaced my 70-200 F4L non-IS. Though excellent, I didn't use it that much. Too bulky and missing IS. The 55-250 was a nice surprise and I don't feel I've made a great step down regarding IQ. And I'll probably use it a lot, because of the size, the IS, and the good zoom range.
AF a bit slow, but accurate. Great value for money ...
