Yeah, it's plastic, and it's not the most solid lens ever built, but for a measely 100 dollars you get an awesome low-light and portraiture lens. The zoom is really fast, and the noise isn't a big deal at all. This is a perfect beginner lens, and for the price, you can't go wrong. Unless you really need f/1.4, if you're in the market for a nice 50mm lens, buy this.
