Canon Deluxe Backpack 200 EG

Review Date: May 21, 2005 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $40.00 | Rating: 8

Pros: Cost. Plenty of compartments. Easy to carry.
Would have liked more padding on some sides (esp. top).

My review is coming from a newb perspective! Smile My 300D is my first DSLR and this is my first serious camera bag in a long time. I am very happy with this for the cost. There is a fair amount of room, and I can probably even coerce my 12" iBook inside, in a Tucano SecondSkin. I think that's probably a significant concern, since were I travelling with this, it would be inconvenient to also carry the laptop backpack from Samsonite that I normally use with my iBook. Still the secondary compartment in the front is slightly on the small side to me.

The one (I think remediable) big flaw in the design of this is the default way that a body with lens attached is supposed to go in. I don't like this, especially if the bag is relatively empty (i.e. you sadly do not own enough glass to fill the compartments! Sad). The default arrangement has the body with the lens pointing down at the very top of the bag. Since the bag doesn't have any webbed sides or anything to prevent the main flap from falling totally open, and there is little padding on the top side of the bag, I am just not comfortable with this. (Although, to be fair, there is an elastic band that holds the body in at the lens junction, so that you should probably be able to hold the bag vertically without the body fallying out.) Fortunately, I found that I could pull out the entire insert and put it in upside down, so that the camera sits with lens up on the bottom of the bag. I'm not sure if there's an obvious reason why this is a bad idea; I like it much better.

All in all, for $40, this is great. Smile
