Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM

Review Date: Jun 8, 2007 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $6,400.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: Sharp...Sharp...Sharp...Oh did I mention that it is SHARP... Built like a aircraft carrier!! Backgrounds out of focus...like butter!
Cons:
I bought this lens and I knew that it was both HEAVY and Expensive.. Negative aspects NONE!!! I got what I paid for!

Not much to say that hasn't already been said... You do get what you pay for! I sold my 500mm IS to pick up the speed of this lens both in AF and aperture... I put my 1.4II on it and have an equal to the image quality of my 500mm and when the focal length isn't needed BAM ... I have the speed of the 400mm 2.8... life is good.. Is this lens sharper than the 500mm ... maybe... is it as portable... I think not! But I rarely venture far with my gear (two total knees will do that)
This lens does perform as reported and I feel fortunate to have it

Sigma 800mm f5.6 EX Apo HSM

Review Date: Apr 5, 2006 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $3,000.00 | Rating: 9

Pros: Size, Mechanical Build Quality, Image Quality, Fills a focal length hole in the Canon EF lens list
Cons:
Internal finish could be better

This review will be a simple one.. the other reviews have covered most issues well. This lens is sharp and as long as you employ good technique you will realize it's potential.. I have not been impressed with it's performance with Converters .. I have tried the Canon 1.4II the Canon 2X II and the Sigma APO 2X with mixed/poor results.. The lens begs for a stable platform.. I have been using a Gtizo 325 and a Wimberley with great success... Colors good, contrast good, AF great for getting you close and then manual to tweak... and with a lens of this length, tweak is something you have to do.. as depth of focus is THIN .. but back grounds creamy smooth... and after all, that is what I bought it for!! This is the EX HSM model and I am told that the DG model has addressed my only beef with this lens .. the internal finish.. How does this compare to my 500 F4 IS? Well I will say this.. I do miss the IS !!!!! Big time... but extra reach without the degradation of an extender WOW... money well spent!!

Pros: Light Weight, IS, Build
Cons:
Price, Price, Price

You remember when you were young and you were given the advice.. When you are conflicted as to which product is best for you.. and you have 2 choices one is cheap but not quite as good and then there is the good one that is way more expensive..It is better to save your money and buy the good one when you can??? Do you remember that?? This is one of those times ... I didn't listen.. I bought a 50-500 and figured that the loss of light could be made up for by nice bright days.. WHAT was I thinking!!! What about the other 200 days a year .. What about IS .. What about that extra Fstop or two .. What about ... What was I thinking??? This lens is built to last for ever.. The lens produces images that are Super Sharp in contrast to that 50-500 which took a LOT of hard work to get kinda sharp images. The IS is a god-send for those occasional hand held shots and with the weight of this lens I do not doubt that this was the right lens to buy.. I too had the deamon argument 600is vs 500is... the weight of the 500 scored the win.. And I will tell you the 1.4x extender renders Very Sharp images with no extra effort.. and the AF works just fine Thank You!! I even tried this lens with the Sigma APO 2x from my 180macro.. I was truly amazed.. these images were beyond my expectations.. not 500 with 1.4 sharp but close. Would I buy this lens again.. In a heart beat... Good to use the right tripod and head.. try the Gitzo CF 325 and a Wimberley.. In combination for the investment of $6400 you have telephoto heaven. Color quality, build quality, Sharpness, Weight and a lens case that is worthless.. This lens is a true winner..
