Coming from the cheap nikon 80-200 afd and the lovely 70-200 VR, I am disapointed by this lens overall. The IS works really well, and I like the mode 2 for panning, works well. But image clarity is my aim, and this lens just doesn't cut it. Wide open this lens is left behind by my nikkor version, way way behind, and that is disapointing.

I got this lens as a first lens on my new 1d2 body, until i get bigger lens for sports. I was shocked how cheap and plasticy it was compared to my nikon 50mm f1.8, which feels so much higher quality.
Even the plastic on the nikon looks nicer.
Once on the camera though i have to say it is far far better than my nikon 50mm ever was, especially wide open it is much sharper.
I like it.
