Canon EOS 30D

Canon_30D
Review Date: Jun 15, 2006 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $1,400.00 | Rating: 7

Pros: Size, battery life, large LCD, price, ergonomics.
Cons:
Had to upgrade to CS 2 from CS to use this camera properly. RAW software was written poorly and is far from smooth or fast compared to Photoshop. Low light features, sharpness and color trueness seem acceptable in comparison to the 20D and are superior to the D200, but lack are found wanting terribly when compared to the 8Mp 1D Mark II or the 1D Mark IIn. You get what you pay for.

Good overall camera. Canon can do better and has, just not for the price. A camera the size of the 30D with the large LCD, but with the low light capabilities and the sharpness of the 1D Mark II would suit me better.

Pros: Crisp. Fast focus.
Cons:
Does not do well on less then a full frame body.

I used this lens quite often when I had my 1Ds, but never liked the results when it was attached to my 1D Mk II. I expect it to come back into regular service with my upgrade to the FF 1Ds Mk II.

Pros: Few. Built tough.
Cons:
Low contrast, poor zoom design (pumps in and blows out air as it zooms bringing in al kinds of whatever) lens creep when pointed down. Focus slow. Manual focus was too tight and hard to use.

I had a Nikon mount version and must say I was not pleased.

Pros: Fast, crisp, white and plenty of reach.
Cons:
IS softens the image.

Great lens for my work in the rookery. Can't think of anything I could replace it with.

Pros: Fast, sharp and great bokah.
Cons:
Slow AF

Positivly the best aestetic affects of any lens I have ever used. I sold mine to buy a 85/1.8, 100/2 and a 70-200/2.8 L. I should have never done that. The 85/1.8 doesn't come close to the satifaction I was getting with the 1.2. Buying a new one this week.
