Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM

EF24_14LII
Review Date: Jan 20, 2009 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 10

Pros: Excellent colour, high contrast, sharp wide open, superb build quality.
Cons:
large and heavy with a huge lens hood that I will not be using.

I find that this is a noticeably better lens than my two year old Canon 24mm f2.8 lens.
For a start the build quality is superb and the optical performance is so much better that I can see the difference between the two lenses straight away on the screen of the camera (1DsMk3).
At the aperture of f2.8 it is sharper, has higher contrast and is much brighter around the edges than my old 24mm f2.8. Even at f4.5 I can see a difference between the two lenses. I have not tested the lens above f4.5.
At the maximum aperture of f1.4 the performance is very good indeed-though not quite as sharp as at f2.8 (which is as expected). The edges at f1.4 are pretty good too if a little darker (also to be expected) but this does not bother me and I am certainly going to work happily at full aperture with this lens.
After taking and looking at only a few frames I can see already that this is a great lens; one that I will be able to rely on at work to do it's best (so now I only have me to blame). And considering it's high optical quality and superb build compared to say a Leica or a Hasselblad lens, I think it is a bargain.

Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III

Review Date: Apr 26, 2008 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 10

Pros: Improved image quality over the Mark 2 version.
Cons:

I am very happy with the improved image quality compared to my Mark 2 version.(better dynamic range, richer colour, all in all, more filmy)

The larger screen and simpler control systems are nice to have too.

Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM

Review Date: Nov 3, 2007 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 10

Pros: Sharpest lens ever and great build quality.
Cons:
none

I love how sharp this lens is- even at full aperture it is brilliant. And when it is stopped down just a little bit the image quality goes to astonishing and outstanding. It must be one of the best lenses on the planet. Also the build quality is excellent.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM

Review Date: Nov 3, 2007 Recommend? no | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 7

Pros: Excellent build
Cons:
mis-focusing and too large, see below

I returned the lens because of repeatable mis-focusing/softness at about four feet, using an aperture of f2, that made purchase of the lens pointless. I have rated the lens at 7 but in truth I would not rate it at all-except as a paper weight(is that too mean?) Perhaps I was doing something wrong-but I don't think I was - I am a very experienced photographer. I may test a different 50mm 1.2 in the future. But should one have to do quality control on such expensive optics?
I find the 50mm 1.4 and the 85mm 1.8 superb lenses but I wish they had the build quality of the 1.2 lenses because they do let in dust between the elements-especially the 85mm 1.8. I know a bit of dust makes no difference but it is hardly a professional lens and colleagues are always remarking about my two dusty lenses, which is annoying!
I wish Canon would just make an L type 50mm 1.4 and also an L type 85mm 1.8/ or.4 lens. They would be much more practical than the 1.2's to many more people and would, I imagine, be the sharpest lenses on the planet.
