Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8G IF-ED AF-S Nikkor

Review Date: Mar 3, 2009 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $1,115.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: sharp, sharp, sharp even at 14mm in the corners
Cons:
front element exposure

This is the worlds best wide angle lens & along with the 24 70 2.8 are why i am a nikon shooter after 18 years of canon.
many people & review sites go on about the size of this lens
but if you have used/seen the 24-70 2.8 there is very little difference in practice as they are both the same length .the 14 24 is the same width across as the 24 70 with the hood reversed & is only 70g more weight.
if you have used any wide angle lens & thought the edges were so poor it was faulty.you will be very pleased with this lens ,The price is not cheap ,but if you look at the alternatives ie nikon 14mm lens for same price point! it is not as bad as it first looks, very good flair resistance/fab colours & build on a par with 24 70
cons -it wont take filters but neither does any other super wide lens so no big surprise really.

like many other reviews i to was / am a little concerned about the front element but if you get in to the habit of fitting the front cap after every use this should be fine .

if you like wide angle this will be the best lens your money will buy -just get it . & forget the 17 35 & 18 35 this lens make them look 20 years old.

Pros: great build ,af system ,iso range, very good configurable menue ,8fps with grip, built in flash
Cons:
throw away the strap!,no software included.

This i feel is the best priced/feature set full frame camera out there at the moment ,until 18 months or so ago canon with the exclusive use of the cmos sensor was way ahead .now that nikon are using this technology, this wins over any noise issues from old, hands down . after 18 years of using canon & the last 3 with a 5d & L glass here are my thoughts & reasons for choosing this camera/system rather than the new 5dmk11 /canon .
much better build with faster a.f than canon ,unless you make wallpaper size prints 12mp is all you need . super configurable, ability to program buttons for fast response, built in flash very handy for use as a controller for sb 800 / 900 & a very hand fash when out & about (although a would also buy the excellent sb 400 for the built in tilt head for 99 ) 5 fps very good & with the grip 8fps is all you will ever need. new lenses like the 24 70 2.8 & 14 24 2.8 are some of the best glass for slr use around as i feel canon will need some new glass to cope with so much resolution. nikon flash system far better than canon 580ex11,so easy to get results 1st time every time.

now that both canon & nikon have put up there prices there is no difference ,but this is a minor point as they both cost too much!!

points i dont like- why do all camera makers give you such a crappy strap!!-throw away & buy an op tech for 17 to make your camera feel 1/2 its weight. nikon nx2 software not included, but rubbish anyway. canon software good & comes free

overall very happy with my choice .but this full frame lark means the price of the camera body is just the start of your expense- so you may be better of with dx/efs.

Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED NIKKOR AF-S

Review Date: Feb 4, 2009 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 9

Pros: sharp, fast ,silent & great build quality
Cons:
no v.r,a little heavy

like many others here i to have switched from canon (after 17 years).when i first looked into it i was not so happy with the smaller lens choice for fx use compaired to canon but when you actually try this lens out it is optically so much better than any of my array of lenses on my 5d incl.24-70 & leaves the 24 105is in the dust ,yes it's a heavy ish lens but this thing is all metal incl.the filter thread & a rubber gasket on the rear to complete the weather sealing on d700/3,
after all best image quality is what we all strive for & the lens has it in buckets so should be a keeper long after the d700/d3
have gone.
