Pros:
great wa range, very good image quality using optimal apertures, smaller and lighter weight (compared to 16-35L)
Cons:
not great wide open, not great at the long end (35mm)
compared the 17-35L against two new 16-35L on my 1Ds, practically, for my type of shooting there was no difference in sharpness or distortion. color fringing is a tad better corrected on 16-35L, one has to fix it in ps anyway. lots of people are trading up to the 16-35, great bargains out there. test before you buy.

Pros:
constanst F2.8, zoom range
Cons:
strong barrel distortion on ff, professionally not usable under f5.6
this lens might be great for the 1.6x sensor, but on the full frame it simply distorts too much at the wide end. it is also not usable below 5.6 (at the wide end) for my needs. test before you buy.
