Nikon 500mm f/4G ED VR AF-S

500VR
Review Date: Dec 10, 2008 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $7,800.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: Extremely sharp, excellent VR, excellent bokeh
Cons:
Expensive

Really love this lens. I've had it 2 months. Used it alot,
including at trip to the Everglades for a week.
Heavy and expensive, but otherwise a joy to use.
Image quality is superb.

Why is it $2500 more than the Canon equivalent?
Partly because of a 5 year warranty.

Review Date: Oct 1, 2007 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 10

Pros: The reference point for optical quality, the 300 f2.8 is really a great lens. Highly recommended.
Cons:
Expensive, but you get what you pay for. Lens cap is a pain to install and remove.

I love this lens. Really, really sharp and contrasty.
Images look fantastic. Great lens for bike
races and triathlons.
Coupled with the 1.4x Teleconverter
it makes a superb wildlife kit. So much smaller
and lighter than the 500 f4 or 600 f4, this is
the lens I usually take on trips.
Built extremely well. Handles nicely.
Highly recommended.

Very well made, excellent lens. I love using this optic.
Usually the lens I have on my camera.
Useful zoom range.
It is a bit expensive.

2144NAS_180
Review Date: Dec 22, 2005 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $950.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: Really wide, very high optical quality, good build quality
Cons:
none

Very slight purple fringing is the only drawback to this excellent lens.
One of my favorites.
I've had it now for six months and love it.
Used it extensively on a trip to Banff in August; wonderful
photos!
Highly recommended.

Pros: Very sharp, well made, a joy to use
Cons:
None (you get what you pay for)

One of Canon's really great lenses.
Very sharp, contrasty. Bright image in view finder. Nice size and weight.
Stunning images. Has a depth of field scale.
This and the 135 f2 are my favorite lenses.

Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM

Review Date: Nov 6, 2004 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $900.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: one of the finest lenses ever made
Cons:
none

A joy to hold and use.
Bring your eye to the viewfinder and: bright, sharp, contrasty, beautiful.
The MTF curves are amazing, almost perfect.
This is one of the best, highest performing lenses ever made by anyone.

No matter how good the D2X turns out to be, it would be hard to change back
to Nikon and give up this lens.

Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED VR AF

1996NAS_180
Review Date: Sep 12, 2004 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $1,400.00 | Rating: 6

Pros: sharp, good VR, nice focal length range, well-made
Cons:
very, very slow AF - slowest lens AF I've ever experienced, maybe the slowest in all of recorded history.

I bought this lens when it first came out.
I have used this lens in Yellowstone, and for a couple of triathlons.
I don't use it much because of the slow AF.
It also doesn't focus very closely. I was photographing street
performers in San Francisco, and I had to keep backing up to get them
in focus. For most tele things I prefer the 80-200/2.8.

Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM

ef70-300_45-56doisu
Review Date: Aug 15, 2004 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $1,299.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: Sharp, light, small. Compared with 70-200L, its a joy to carry and use. Excellent IS and AF
Cons:
Flares easily, price is way too high

I take this lens almost everywhere.
Its light, inconspicuous, sharp, good AF, good IS.
I enjoy using this lens.

I use a 70-200 if I'm putting a lens on a tripod or if I'm shooting action/sports.

I use the 100-400 if I'm shooting wildlife, surfers, etc.

In its niche, the 70-300 DO is an excellent lens. It doesn't do everything well,
but no lens does.

Canon EOS 1D Mark II

1D2
Review Date: Jun 16, 2004 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $4,499.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: Solid, Fast, Excellent Image Quality
Cons:
Heavy and Large and Expensive

Coming from a 10D, this camera is enormous! It doesn't fit in some of my
camera bags.

It works just great: fast, resposive, solid.
Image quality is superb.

I'm very pleased with this camera.
It's as close to the ideal camera as I've found.

Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM

ef17-40_4l_1_
Review Date: Apr 11, 2004 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $600.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: sharp, light, fast focusing, a joy to use
Cons:
none

This is my favorite lens of all time.
When I hike, this lens is on my camera/tripod.
Great zoom range, light, well made.
I don't need a faster lens for landscape photography.
