Canon EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM

Review Date: Oct 16, 2005 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 10

Pros: compact, light, sharp, excellent image quality, quite fast and perfect focal length range for everyday. IS is better than i thought and has been used more than i imagined i would.
didnt come with lens hood

At the price this lens is now (over here in AUS) both new and 2nd hand i cant see a better value for money lens. I have also had the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 and i would choose this over it. It is almost permanently on my camera and i have been blown away with the results. Its very sharp, colours are nice and its fast. If you put this with the 350D or 20D it can be used in low light as the high ISO and IS work effectively together. Im considering selling my Tamron 28-75 f2.8 as this has just been so useful and produced stellar results.

Im able to handhold 1/15 @85mm and 1/5 at 17mm which is just so useful. I find that the lens allows me to take pictures in situations where usually wouldnt. Im now experimenting more in low light shooting and being able to capture the atmosphere of these places (eg in bars or peoples places) without having to ruin it by using the flash.

This is the type of lens that could be your one lens setup - its that good and that useful.
