Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM

ef_100_28_1_
Review Date: Feb 16, 2007 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $450.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: Price, build quality, sharpness, smooth focus ring, size, weight.
Cons:
None.

This is a fantastic lens, in every way. Under normal shooting the AF is fast, bokeh is lovely and optics are very sharp.

In macro conditions this lens is fantastic, working distance isn't bad (you can't beat it at this size/weight) and put bluntly, it just works.

Anybody who says this lens has slow AF doesn't realise that in the macro range this lens is pretty much as fast as they get. And with the focus limiter set, this lens is as fast as almost any other regular telephoto USM lens.

This lens is a factory built for pumping out great photos.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II

Review Date: Dec 24, 2006 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 9

Pros: Cost, sharp, wide aperture, perfect focal length on DSLR.
Cons:
Cheap plastic body, noisy & slow AF.

This lens is unbeleiveably sharp, at this price every Canon system owner should have this lens.

It's great in low-light (though AF will hunt a bit) and the results are always pleasing.

Stop it down to f4 and this lens really shines.

Mine broke from a minor fall, which does speak to it's cheap build quality... but, I'll surely get another one soon.

Sigma Electronic Flash EF 500 DG Super

Review Date: Dec 9, 2006 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $285.00 | Rating: 9

Pros: Cheap, powerful, great features.
Cons:
Build, QC, not a 580EX.

Great budget flash, worked great with my 300D and now with my 30D. Sure it's plastic and flimsy, but it does what it's supposed to do. It was this or a 580EX and after trying both, I couldn't fully justify the extra cost on my budget.
