Canon EOS 5D

Review Date: Dec 20, 2006 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 10

Pros: affordable full frame, image quality
Cons:
sensor dust

Iíve used it for 6 months and so far very happy. Image quality is exceptional for the price. Iím in a race for better quality in digital and often rent Phase One and Leaf digital backs. Unfortunately MF digital is still very expensive and affordable only by financially gifted. 5D is a cutting edge of digital image quality still today; itís not far behind 1Ds mkII.

Other pointed at `drawbacks`, they are make sense at some level, Iím just not trying to look at 5D as an ultimate camera with universal use. Itís a more a portraiture/fashion/advertising and less sport/event camera, 3fps is more than enough, and mirror-lock-up is somewhere deep-down in the menus also fine by me [I would not consider it as landscape camera]. In case of event/documentary I use good-old 1D with 4mpx, really no need for more details, but need a quick response and 8fps for sureÖ

10/10 is well deserved rating for this amazing camera! Well done Canon.

Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM

Review Date: Dec 20, 2006 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 10

Pros: excellent performer, color, sharpness, build, price
Cons:
none for the price

Unfortunately Canon does not have perfect QA, and some of us getting bad copies... or maybe body+lens do not much by some reason. I recommend sending body and lens for calibration if you get sharpness less than perfect. It is simply as sharp as 35mm f/1.4L at f5.6-f11.

IĎve used it on 5D for over 6 months. For the price it is an exceptional performer, some corner softness and distortion at 17-24mm, some vignetting and CA wide open :: nothing to worry about, especially at half price of 16-35mm.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM

Review Date: Nov 22, 2006 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 10

Pros: sharpness, contrast, price
Cons:
many bad copies

With all its limitation it is still most usable lens in studio. I had it serviced to fix AF, and it is very sharp (maybe not as sharp as 100mm f/2.8). Yes, it hunts, AF is not too quick, you need to stop down (couple stops), and it has reputation of a lens with AF problemsÖ. but still it would be an excellent value even to be 1.5 times more expensive.

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM

Review Date: Nov 22, 2006 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 10

Pros: solid build, exceptional results (sharpness, colors, contrast), price
Cons:
none

I've used it for half a year on full-frame sensor. Excellent everything!!!

The only issue I have is 100mm is not very usable focal length for what I do (people, portrait, advertising)... but it is exceptional lens which exceeds expectation and easily can have red ring on it. Macro 1:1 is nice addition.
