Sigma 15-30mm f3.5-4.5 EX Aspherical DG DF

Review Date: Jun 17, 2004 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $410.00 | Rating: 8

Pros: Inexpensive, Wide (15mm film, 24mm digital), Great build and finish.
Cons:
FLARE, Non-HSM focusing, FLARE, built in hood useless, FLARE, 82mm or gel filters, FLARE.

Flare is a HUGE issue and must be carefully watched anytime the sun or any bright light source is in or anywhere near the frame. The built in hood does very little to actually shade the lens (particularly when turned to the portrait orientation). The Dual Focus feature takes a bit to get used to but functions well.

A great lens with fantastic wide angle coverage at an inexpensive price.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II

Review Date: Jun 17, 2004 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $75.00 | Rating: 8

Pros: Price, sharpness, weight.
Cons:
Build quality, focus? ring?, AF motor.

Either drop a few more $ and find yourself the Mark I version of this lens or buy a second copy of the Mark II to use after the first one breaks. Though optically similar (identical?) the addition of the true focusing ring, distance scale, and vastly superior build quality make the Mark I version a much nicer lens to work with. You won't notice the 2.1 oz weight difference but you will notice the quality in your hands.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8

Review Date: Jun 17, 2004 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $65.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: Inexpensive, sharp, well built, distance scale, focus ring.
Cons:
Non-USM focus.

Yes it's a standard lenght, rather bland when compared to a nice wide angle or a medium telephoto let alone a zoom. Bargains can still be found, I picked one up a second on e*ay earlier this year (with a EOS 750 body) for less than a new 50mm Mk II sells for. The distance scale, focus ring, metal mount, and better build quality certainly distinguish this lens from it's newer (optically identical) svelter younger brother.

Certainly one of the best buys in the Canon lens lineup.
