Nikon 28-70mm f/2.8 ED-IF AF-S

1961NAS_180
Review Date: Jan 7, 2008 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $875.00 | Rating: 9

Pros: It's sharp, huge, fast focusing, bright and just overally gorgeous.
Cons:
It's got the crinkle-coat finish that's looking a bit dated and Tokina-ish, it's HUGEMONGOUS.

I've had this lens just a short time, but while it's large and the hood scares small children, it's just a gem of a lens. With the new 24-70/2.8 out from Nikon, this lens is sure to drop in value on the used market as the gearheads upgrade to the new hotness.

It's sharp and contrasty, even wide open and has great handling on a pro body. I could see this being a bear on a D40x or a D70, but on a D2/D3 or D200 with the grip, it's just about right (to me).

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM

Review Date: Mar 11, 2005 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $1,450.00 | Rating: 9

Pros: Sharp as a tack, fast AF, IS, excellent build quality
Cons:
It's not f/1.4 :), it's somewhat pricey, the lens hood scares small children and the elderly

Okay, first off... to all those who complain about how "large and heavy" this lens is... come ON. The 300/2.8 or 400/2.8 are large and heavy. This lens is EASILY hand-holdable by anyone who has even reasonable muscle tone in their upper body. You'd think this thing was a boat anchor for all the crying I hear about size/weight. I hike with this lens routinely and it's not a problem.

Now that that's said... this lens is gorgeous. The build and image quality are just simply stunning. I replaced a 70-200/4 with a Sigma 70-200/2.8 HSM and then replaced the Sigma with this beauty. I have never regretted the purchase one bit. It feels weighty and solid in your hands, but not overly so. The AF is fast and definite (an improvement over the Sigma, which hunted badly). The images that come out of this lens are amazing at all apertures.

I shoot sports, some outdoors stuff, street photojournalism, weddings and concerts with this lens and it consistently impresses both myself and my clients with its color and sharpness.

I wish I could recommend it higher than just "yes"!
