This is one of Nikon's older AF-D lenses. That it is still in the line-up says something about it's ability to deliver good images. This lens is solidly built, relatively compact compared to other lenses in this range and reasonably priced for 2.8 glass. As an older lens, its focusing is slower and noisy. But the images it produces are tack sharp.
My only complaint (and it is a big one), is this lens will flare any alight source that comes close to it's axis. Ironically, despite it's speed, shooting at night can be a trial as various night light sources tend to flare.
Overall, this lens is an exceptional performer if you can accept it's limitations. I would prefer the 28-70 2.8 ED-IF AF-D if I could afford to spend nearly a $1,000 more (who wouldn't?).
