Nikon 85mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor

Pros: Light weight Great image quality Fast
Cons:
Sort of "loose" feel to the manual focus ring.

I read all the reviews regarding the 85 1.8 vs the 85 1.4 and could not bring myself to part with an extra $1,000 for a stop. This lens is fast, light, and very, very sharp. Contrast and color is fantastic.

The only bummer is the cheesy feel to the manual focus ring. It just feels sort of loose and cheap comapred to the image quality. The auto focus is wicked fast and of course view finder image very bright. If you shoot in autofocus, as I do mostly, you won't be bothered by the manual focus feel.

That is the only thing that keeps me from giving it an excellent. Must be a hold over from the great feel of my "old" Pentax glass and the 17-35 2.8 and 80-200 2.8 afs lenses.

Pros: Very bright Easy to use Fast focus Superb contrast and image quality
Cons:
None

This is a great lens. Quite possibly the finest lens I have used even at 17mm. It has a lot less distortion than comparable fixed lenses in the 20mm range.

Great for indoor work, groups, scenics, if you are a photojournalist it is almost a must. (depending on your "style") Combine this with the 80-200 2.8 afs and you have a great 2 lens system that covers 95% of what you would need to have coverage for. While this lens is a bit on the heavy side I like the steadiness the weight provides. The weight is comparable if not less than a 17 or 18mm 2.8, 24mm 2.8, and 35 mm 2.8.

A must have!

Pros: Razor sharp Easy to handle Fast
Cons:
None

I was a die hard primary lens user since being a teenager 30 years ago. I liked the decsions you were forced to make with a fixed focal length. Also the image quality, fixed vs zooms, used to be quite an issue. No more! This lens is amazing. It is bright, sharp, handles well and while it is a bit heavy I think that makes it easier to hand hold. Helps steady down any wandering that may occur after a few cups of coffee!
