I got one of these as soon as they became available in the USA and have never regretted it. This really is a lens Nikon should have built. And as others have mentioned it can also be used effectively at f/2.8 in low light conditions.
While I don't shoot my D300 much anymore, I'll always have this lens with me when I do.
