Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II

Review Date: Nov 1, 2006 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 6

Pros: very cheap, low weight, compact, F1.8, very sharp from F4
Front Focus problem below F4, expecially ad 1.8

I exchanged this lens for 3 times. All the same problems. At first it seems to work fine. But when I brought my camera (EOS 30D) to Canon Service to fix the backfocus problem with all my L series (17-40 and 70-200), the 50F1,8 started to be front focus at large apertures. Canon specialist said that there was not nothing to do... That lens is a "cheap line" and doesn't offer any technical possibility to be fixed.

Now I still have this lens, but for that reason I don't like anymore to use it at large apertures. It's very sharp from F4 on....

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM

Review Date: Nov 1, 2006 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 10

Pros: very sharp on all FL, cheap to be a L series, light, good construction

At first I experienced backfocus problem with more than one lens (thanks to my local reseller for the exchange). Then I sent the lens to Canon Service with my camera: but the problem was on the camera - EOS 30D. The lens was OK.

Now it works beautifully!

Highly Recomended

Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM

Review Date: Jun 28, 2006 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 10

Pros: really sharp even at F4, light, good construction, reduced flare, reduced CA, reduced distortion only slightly visible at 17 on APS-C camera. Really good for portraits.
A bit short to be a "general usage" lens and needs another lens to cover the mid-range (like a 24-70 mm).

Very useful lens on APS-C camera where it exhibits the base focal range of 27-64 mm equivalent for 35 mm camera: its good as "base" lens but not really sufficient to use it as "walk-around" lens. Very sharp in all the focal range. Very robout with prof construction.

Highly Recomended for APS-C camera (not tested on FF camera til now)
