Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC MACRO

Review Date: Feb 22, 2008 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $400.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: Sharp throughout the zoom range. 1.2 Macro ability at 70mm. Faster at the long end than much of the competition (f4.5). Good build and quick AF with HSM.
Wish it were 2.8 throughout the zoom range.

The Sigma 17-70 is quite the piece of glass for the price. The sharpness rivals the competition and sometimes tops it. Very convenient range to go along with that excellent IQ and 1.23 macro ability at the tele end comes in handy when you don't have your dedicated macro lens about or don't have time to change lenses. The added HSM and improved lens cap design are most welcome to an already excellent piece of kit. If the range and the 2.8-4.5 works for you, then you can't go wrong with this lens.

Pros: Ridiculously sharp!
Absolutely none.

Sharp, sharp and sharp! Relatively lightweight (compared to f2.8 IS version) means I take it on hikes pretty easily and more often. Shooting with this lens is a joy. Feels good on my 400D and image quality is second to none.

Canon EOS Rebel XTi (400D)

Pros: Excellent image quality. Great design in a small package. Perfect for photographers on the go. Dust reduction system has lessened the number of times I have needed to manually clean the sensor.
Grip is on the small side, but workable.

I actually moved from a 30D to the 400D as I like to hike with my cameras and I also change lenses fairly often in the field. The 400D, thanks to its auto sensor cleaning system, has lessened the frequency with which I need to manually clean the sensor, but this would be meaningless if the image quality produced by the sensor itself wasn't excellent and I am happy to report the 400D is on a par with my previous 30D in this respect.

I have been shooting with this body for four months now and have gotten consistently excellent results. I use the 400D with the Canon 24-105 f4 L IS, 70-200 f4 L IS, 85 f1.8 and the EF-S 10-22 f3.5-4.5 lenses and all perform admirably on this camera body.

Anyone looking for a lightweight body with an excellent sensor should give the 400D careful consideration.

Pros: Excellent color, sharpness and contrast. Nice size and feel to lens construction. Definitely an L.
None that I can see. Performs as I expect it to.

I have been consistently pleased with the results from this lens. Very nice color, contrast and sharpness. The size and weight are just about perfect to use as a general purpose walk-around lens. Overall I could not be happier with the lens.
