Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM

Review Date: Aug 28, 2012 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 10

Pros: 'Price', light to hold, very sharp, fast focus, hood.
Cons:
None, I looked at the box first..

First chance to use it, was today.
Chasing gannets in Shetland, lovely blue sky.
This lens is a great buy, very easy to use, very easy to hold for a good amount of time.
I also tried the lens with a carbon fibre monopod, worked great.
Very fast focus, easy to hold the focus too when waiting for that 'great' shot!
Worth the money; people that moan about 'lack of IS', spend more money then, simple.
A lot more money..
Buy this, it makes a lot of sense.

Pros: Great fun to use, cheap, very well made, IQ.
Cons:
I lose it in my kit bag..

What a fun little thing!
Great fun to use, I have stuck it on my eos 3 film camera for now; lovely walkabout lens. Works great with a full-frame camera.
Also very nice on my 50D; the IQ is very, very good. Set it too 5.6 or there about, and snap away.
Easy.
Fun.
Cheap, for a Canon lens..
Sharp.
Good in low light.
Buy it.
Some shots to have a look at;

Pros: Very sharp, very fast focus, light, well made, it is mine..
Cons:
Having to pay for it! Nothing wrong with it, read the product's box and you know what you are getting..

Hello.
Well, what fun there is to be had with this lens. It is very sharp, VERY. I was going to get the 135 mm, went for the 200 mm instead. I live in Shetland and we are blessed with plenty of wildlife, more or less on our door-step, so that bit of extra reach is great for me. Works very well with my 50d, great set-up for wildlife.
The lens did surprise me at the speed that it can focus, faster than my other L lenses. I really am going off zoom lenses, primes is the way to go for me, zoom with my legs!
More fun..
Why people want IS on every lens is beyond me, none of my lenses have IS, and I cope. And I have arthritis in my fingers, hands and wrists, and still manage to sell on Getty, and exhibit work in my local art gallery.
May be it is down to technique..
Still, we are all different.
The lens is great, really.
If you are thinking about it, just buy it if you can, this lens really is THE bargain within the Canon range.
Buy it and go take great shots.
Have a look here if you have the time;http://www.flickr.com/photos/fishyfinger/
Just a few shots at the moment, more to follow.
If we ever get a summer here in Shetland..
Thanks for taking the time to read,

Tim x

Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM

Pros: Very sharp, very well made, good fun to use.
Cons:
Price.. I am just tight..

Hello.

Not long had this lens, so still learning!
However, what I can say is that it is very sharp, and it is very true what others here have said; bit soft in the corners on a full frame.
Still, use it on a small sensor camera and you will have a great wide lens.
Great fun to use, love looking for mad angles..
If you want sharpness in the corners, simple, spend more money.
So far I have used it for every type of shot, happy with all the shots I have taken. Use with care, when pointed at peoples faces, and you will get great images.

Love it very much, buy one I think you will like it!
Have a look below, set called 17-40mm, some of the shots taken in Shetland with this lens.

Pros: Sharp, L glass, very well made.
Cons:
Price?

Hello.
Better explain the price thing, I am one of those people that thinks everything is too much money!
Still, it is worth every penny, this is a really good lens.
I am very pleased with myself for getting it, even though I am now penny-less. Good job I like beans..

I live in Shetland, lucky me, plenty of wildlife to take pics of.
Have a look at the link below, and please tell me what you think of the puffin shot.
It is easy here to get close up to birds like puffins, if you know where to go you are almost falling over them!

Very good lens, it is a very good price, and it helps you take what you see; if you know what I mean.
