Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III

1dsmk3
Review Date: Feb 14, 2010 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $4,000.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: Solid build like all 1d series, great detail in pictures, 24x36 posters are just breath taking.
Cons:
None at all I knew exactly what I was getting.

After using crop bodies for the past 6 years I wanted to try a Full frame camera. I had been using 3- 1d Mark III cameras and a Mark II N shooting motocross exclusively. Most would think for motocross the 1d III would be better with its 10 fps but ive never shot like that ever, always a planned shot one at a time so the fps did not matter to me I was more concerned on cropping and printing. Well i've been using the camera for about 3 months now and have printed a bunch of 20x30 and 24x36 posters for my customers and I just could not be happier with the results. Simply amazing image quality even at higher ISO where people say it does not perform that well. Out of 5 Mark III's I had only two needed to go back to the factory for banding and the recall on some bodies. So far even this 1ds Mark III with a earlier serial number has performed flawlessly for me. Ive put it through some heavy rainy days and it never skipped a beat. I loved the Mark III but now after using a FF sensor camera with my 300 F2.8 I will never go back to a crop body. Well I take that back I do use a Mark II N and 50d as back up with W/A lenses on them at the track but my money maker is the 1Ds III.
I was torn to get a Mark 4 but the whole video thing bothers me. Its inevitable that cameras will all be video capable within the next 2 years or so but I will be shooting with this 1ds for years to come. Technology gets better every year but I see this camera holding its own for many years to come. I am very happy with this camera and the amazing images I have taken with it. its a whole new world of photography now. Cropping is at a whole new level and printing is something I look forward too now knowing the results will be fantastic. This is by far the best camera I have owned.

Pros: Super fast AF with this lens..Colors,contrast and IQ are second to none just simply amazing.
Cons:
Id say the price but u get what you pay for this lens is priceless

I shoot Motocross and family stuff but 99.9% motocross..I had a 300mm 2.8 and that was a great lens but had it stolen..I was in the market again for another prime but I felt for some tracks I shoot the 300mm on a non FF camera was a bit limited with lots of media around blocking the line of sight.I looked at this lens and thought 200mm (260mm on Mark III) would be perfect. People ask why would I need a F2.0 lens for outdoors?Well with my 300 2.8 I didnt shoot wide open I shot between 4.0 and 5.6 most of the time and occasionally wide open. Its the speed of focus and the colors you get from these hign end primes is what makes me want to shoot with them.
My first day I was not impressed with it but it was all me..I tried some different metering modes and setting and all I can say is wow.I just shot the AMA motocross national opening round and used my new Mark III and this 200mm 2.0 most of the weekend. I can tell you how great the photos came out but you can see for yourself here.

I will shoot some indoor motocross this week and this lens will shine there indoors but dont hesitate even if your shooting outdoors with this lens. Yes its a "specialty" lens but that does not mean that it will not work outdoors..This lens is as good if not better than the 300 F2.8 lens and thats saying alot. Put a 1.4 extender on it you got your self a whole nother lens at 2.8. This is my favorite lens to date that ive owned with my 70-200 2.8 close but just not in the same league as this gem. This is just simply an outstanding all around do it all lens and with a 1.4 EX you have the choice of lens for whatever you do without losing IQ or F stop.
Great great great!

Pros: Great colors, very fast focussing, great for sports and any kind of photography.
Cons:
zero I have no complaints best workhorse lens out there bar none.

This by far the best lens i've owned.. I just purchased a 300 F2.8 about 2 months ago and sold it 2 weeks ago to go back to this lens.. Dont get me wrong the 300 2.8 is absolutley unreal but I just can't justify the price between the two.. I shoot motocross exclusivley and the 70-200 is a work horse lens.. It does everything very well and i've got outstanding results from it for over 6 years I been using it. I just have nothing but great things to say about this lens, ive owned over 4 of these lenses and just ordered my fifth one.
Dont hesitate if your in the market for a lens of this caliber it is just that good.

Pros: Best glass for the buck, bokeh is beautiful from this little guy. Build is CANON "L" period :)
Cons:
none this lens rocks

Ive owned this lens for a few years and absolutley love it. I shoot motocross photography for a living and was very skeptical about purchasing the F4 instead of the F2.8 but the price was such a big difference I could not justify the extra $3000 dollars so I took a chance and went with the F4. One word___ WOW this is one lens that I will never get rid of even when my 300 F 2.8 comes in a few days I still will never get rid of this one. I have nothing but positive results with the lens.

Pros: Great workhorse lens, works well in low light, af is very fast.Color is 2nd to none its what I expect from Canon "L" line
Cons:
Nothing at all

Ive used this lens for 3 years now and it has been my work horse lens for motoxand a basic all around lens.I prefer shooting with primes but this lens is simply an amazing piece of equipment. The colors and contrast are beautiful and it works very well in low light conditions. IS is a must for me shooting 1200 photos in 4 hours means im running half the time and the IS makes up for my shakiness. I think any nov-pro photog should have this lens in there arsenal it's the best all around lens IMHO.
