Pros: Fast and quiet focusing, sharp pictures, compact size, price
Cons:
Slight wobble in outer element when at full tele

I also use this with the D100 and it is the perfect general use lens. Getting filters can be tricky, but all you need for digital is a good skylight to protect the outer lens. The AF-S really spoils you. It is so silent and easy to override if you need to. I've dropped the camera/lens a couple of times, so I'm not sure if the outer element wobble (very slight) is my fault or not. I would not use this in the field because it looks like dust/dirt could get in. I've had good luck using this as a portrait lens as well.
If I had it to do over again, I may have gone with the 24-120 VR for the extra reach and VR, but saving $200+ dollars and the size is a decision you will have to make.
