Tamron 90MM F/2.8 Di Macro 1:1 SP AF

Review Date: Nov 20, 2005 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $487.00 | Rating: 9

Pros: Super sharp, nice MF/AF switch, deeply recessed front element
Noisy slow AF, massive extension when focussing to 1:1

This lens feels nice on the body, it's nice and light. Although it is mainly plastic it does have a metal lens mount. It is very sharp, which makes manual focussing easy, even on a plain ground glass screen. The AF is not a lot of help for macro as it hunts a lot, but it works well at the long end - especially when the focus limiter is used to stop hunting too much.

Switching from AF to MF and back is accomplished by pulling and pushing the focus ring. I was skeptical of this arrangement at first but have grown to like it. You don't need to take your eye from the viewfinder and go searching for a tiny AF switch. The focus ring is nice and wide, smooth, and has a nice rubber grip.

The front element is so far recessed that the included lens hood is hardly necessary, which is great for macro work. The lens hood is still nice to have for portrait work though.

Overall, a great lens. The only thing that lets it down is the AF is loud and kind of rubbish.
