Pros: OMG...
Cons:
nothing

so, i own a lot of lenses. 14 to be exact. of all my lenses, the one that i used almost exclusively was the 100mm 2.8 USM non-IS.

when i heard about the IS, i was excited but then i realized that i probably didnt need the IS. so i canceled my pre-order and didnt think twice about it

then one day, i was decided to go for it. on ebay, beachcamera was selling it for $965 - 8% came out to about $875.

i just got the lens today and i have to admit, WOW... the quality out of this lens is incredible. i mean, the non-IS was awesome but something about this lens just takes it to the next level. the images just seem that much more crisp. i guess the best way to put it is, it is like the 135L but with macro capabilities.

i've only played with it for 10 minutes and i am just blown away by its performance.

if you have been on the fence about this lens because you can't justify the extra amount from your 100mm non-IS, trust me, do it. you WILL NOT regret it!

now it is my new favorite lens!

Pros: sharp! USM, 1:1 macro
Cons:
wish it came with the tripod ring.

of all 9 of my lenses, this is by far my favorite lens.
one day i got tired of using my kenko ext tubes and decided to give this one a try.
i used to have the 50 macro.
the main issues with the 50 was that it was not 1:1 and it was not usm.
100mm is so versatile that it is always on one of my bodies.
when people said that this thing was sharp, they sure werent kidding.
get this lens, i got a great deal on mine as the seller was selling it cheap but knowing what i know now, i would definitely pay the full retail price.

Pros: light and compact, price
Cons:
horrible corner sharpness on FF bodies

i had the 35/1.4 long ago and it was one of my favorite lenses.

i was hoping this lens would be a performer but it has a lot of shortfalls.

corner sharpness is a big issue for me with this lens and even up to f/5.6 its not doing so well.

its light and compact so its easy to carry around with out getting a lot of notice.

build quality isnt all that great either. they need a USM model for this lens with much better corner performance

Pros: build quality
Cons:
soft on my old 10d

i bought this lens 1.5 yrs ago.
i used it mainly for weddings on my 10d.
i never once got decent shots at infinity and especially for group shots.
i just figured that at focal lengths this wide (16mm), sharpness just wasnt attainable.

however, after i sold my 10d and got the 20d, i was amazed at the difference. it was the difference between night and day. it was obvious that both of my 10d's had back focus issues with this lens.

the 20d, i have gotten beautiful images each and every time and i loved it. however just recently, it was traded for the 35L.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM

Pros: absolutely sharp as a tack, very light weight, nice colors and contrast, great shallow depth of field, great in low light
Cons:
build quality is not so great, micro-usm is worthless. it needs true usm like its 85 f1.8 and 100 f2 couterparts.

yes the 50mm 1.8 is cheaper and a great lens but spend the extra on the 50mm 1.4 if you got the dough. although i am not absolutely thrilled about the build quality, it is much better than the 1.8.

if you have a dslr with 1.6x, its a great portrait lens.

buy it and go out and shoot all you can with it.

i guarantee that you will love it.
