Canon EOS 5D Mark III

Review Date: Jun 29, 2012 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 10

Pros: AF!!!, build, feel, IQ, viewfinder, feel
maybe a bit pricey

Having used a 5D mII for more than 3 years or so, I hoped like many for an AF imprvment - the rest of the cam was good or very good.

5D mIII:
I took it in my hand, pushed the release button, the cam focused and I loved it Smile
the AF system is just great - there are hardly any out of focus pictures anymore. I find the IQ also slightly better, especially the shades and skin tones (using DPP). I'm thankful that Canon didn't raise the megapixel by much - it saved me money for a faster PC Wink

this digital camera is the first one that I give a perfect "10"

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM

Review Date: Jan 4, 2010 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 10

Pros: color, contrast, sharpness, bokeh!, fast AF
no tripod collar, 72mm would have been nice

I love this lens :-)

I use it for macro, portrait and as one of my walk-around-lenses.
Image quality is excellent, it's got a quick AF, IS (the first one that I like).
In comparison to the "old" 100/2.8, it has slightly better color and contrast. Sharpness is better too (aperture 2.8-4, but not much)
the missing tripod collar and the diameter of 67mm are the things that I don't like.

I recommend it :-)
wether it is worth the extra money, you have to decide yourself...

Canon EOS 5D Mark II

Review Date: May 8, 2009 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $2,650.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: resolution, high ISO performance, colors, size, weight, live view
outer AF points

I owned a 10D, 30D, 5D, 40D and still own a 50D besides this 5DmII.

I use it for portraits, stills, available light pictures, macros, long exposures in a studio and outdoor. I use primes only with this camera.
I haven't used the hd video feature yet since I love to take pictures ;-)
Since I like to be in control I use the M mode most of the times, no auto ISO

Close to perfect camera for my needs. I miss better outer AF points (cross types) - other than that it's just fine for me.
I'm impressed with the high ISO performance (color, contrast) for a 21 mp camera.

I recommend the 5D to everyone who doesn't need a speed demon - well spend money :-)

Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM

Review Date: Mar 30, 2008 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 10

Pros: build, AF, color, contrast, 1.2 (if you need it)
slow af-speed, heavy for a 85? don't like the MF

This lens is amazing. It's color, contrast and bokeh simply blow me away. It's the best lens for portraiture I own and it is my most used prime.

- sharpness at almost all apertures
- excellent build
- bokeh, colors, etc.
- AF accuracy

- AF-speed a bit slow
- price
- don't like the MF

If you can afford it, buy it :-)

Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM

Review Date: Mar 30, 2008 Recommend? no | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 2

Pros: build,
back focus!

I own many primes and this one is the only one that I really hate...

My copy is backfocusing and, after having it calibrated two times, it seems it is not correctable.
the back focus is around 5-6cm at a distance of 1m at all apertures on all bodies (5D, 40D & 30D) I own. if the lens ist focused at objects more than 1.5m away it's almost impossible to say where the focus is.
All my other lenses work fine with my bodies.

I'm really unhappy how this is/was handled from Canon. If I call, they say they look at the problem and I will hear from them within 3 days. After 2 month of waiting, guess who hasn't called...

I'm sure there are working copies of the lens but for sure there are more bad copies of this lens than usual for a L-lens.
sadly, mine does not - and canon (switzerland) doesn't care.

I will send it to canon one more time. If it helps, honestly I doubt it...

If you want to buy one, make sure yours does work properly!
