Pros: Sharp as a very sharp thing. Built like a brick out-house.
Cons:
Older IS. It is no shrinking violet.

Can't believe some folk have sharpness issues with this lens - must be a compatibility issue with the particular copy of lens and particular copy of camera. Maybe micro-adjustment can sort that out? It is very very nearly as sharp on my 40D as the 70-200 f4 IS (the sharpest lens I have ever had). The reach on the C-size sensor is great, and 100% crops are perfectly usable providing you played your part in getting it right.

Cons:
Narrow zoom range - but you know you are buying into that for the IQ

I bought this lens off eBay a year or so ago, and I have not used it a lot in that time, simply because the range of 70-200mm is not one that I go out wanting to cover all that much. More often I take the 24-105 and 100-400 to cover my needs. Not that they are bad lenses, but whenever I take the 70-200 f4, I am totally blown away by the crispness of the detail it delivers. I wager you could get just about as good a screen sized JPEG using a 100% crop from the 70-200 as you could using less of a crop from the 100-400.
