Sigma 100-300mm f4 EX IF HSM APO

Review Date: Nov 26, 2007 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 10

Pros: Great lens and very well built. Sharp at f/4 and beyond, lightening fast focus, HSM is similar to USM and very quiet. The pictures are oustanding right out of the camera. Beautiful finish. Includes a hood and the lens case is outstanding. I own a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM lens and the Sigma lens case blows it away.
Cons:
Little heavy, but you forget once you see the pictures.

If your considering the purchase of this lens; then get one. You won't regret it. I am amazed at the photos that come right out of the camera. Get one and have a blast.

Review Date: Nov 4, 2007 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $854.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: f/2.8, IS, Picture Quality. A delight to use. I haven't experienced any dust yet and hopefully I will not.
Cons:
None.

I'm trying to understand some of the past reviewers of the lens. I think is comical when reviewers rate the following as CONS and give the lens a lesser rating because of it. BUILD QUALITY. Did you not know the build quality of this lens prior to purchasing. The build quality has been discussed on many forums so it shoudn't be a surprise to you. NOT WEATHER SEALED and NO LENS HOOD. Again, did you not know this before you purchased the lens. You talk as though these things were in the specs and yours came without. PRICE. Since when price is a CON. If you can't afford the lens, then common sense dictates that you don't purchase it. FILTER SIZE. I must have missed this one from earlier reviews. When is filter size a CON. The complexity and the design of the lens greatly influence filter size. Since this lens' image quality is on par with most f/2.8 L zooms; why I makes since that it would be 77mm. People read the specs and what's included with the lens. This reminds me of some of the reviews I would read about the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM not being f/2.8. From what I remember the specs stated that it was f/4. We should be limiting our comments to our experience of the product not our imagination or what we wished the lens was.

Pros: Build quality, auto focus, 6.5 fps, image quality, 10mp+ and Live view. I've owned both the 20D and 30D and this is a stepup from both.
Cons:
None yet!

Pros: I once owned this lens and sold it. I recently purchased the Tamron SP AF28-75mm F/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF). While the Tamron is a good lens; it is no substitute for this fabulous lens. I've just repurchased this lens and the only way I will replace this lens is if Canon makes this lens with Image Stabilization. Iíve also owned the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens, which is also a great lens, but I need the additional stop of light. Long live the king.
Cons:
Weight could be a negative, but the quality of the photos is worth every once.

Pros: Image Stabilzation, Range, Build Quality, Sharpness, Focus Speed, Color, Contrast and Weight.
Cons:
None so far!

I purchased this lens April 2006 (build date UU0310) at a super price net of the Canon rebate. Based on the specifications I knew the potential short comings of this lens, but they were acceptable. When I read other reviewers posting that the price is a "cons" I laugh. The price is only a "con" if you borrowed the lens; loved it, but couldn't afford it. If you purchased this lens then price was evidently not a "con". Also, the complaints about "low light" situations or that it should be f/2.8. Get over it and review the specs again. The lens is f/4. If f/2.8 was important to you then you should have purchased the EF 24-70mm f/2.8 USM (an awesome lens). I borrowed one from a friend and I hope to purchase one in the future. This lens is a great walk around lens and not so great for other situations. I'm rating this lens based on the specifications and not on what I want it to be. For those of us who talk about Vignetting, CA and Distortion your probably correct based on your subject matter and I've noticed a little in certain situations, but at the end of the day it is still a solid lens for me. This lens can't be everything for everybody.
