Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM

Review Date: Feb 3, 2013 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 9

Pros: Great opportunity for indoor use! Good autofocus, sharp even at an open aperture.
Cons:
Not an L, but also far from the L price...

Already enthusiastic about the possibilities offered by this lens. I do owe some three L lenses, but all of them are f4. Some pictures on www.sanduloiu.ro

Pros: Sturdy, resistent to a hard wear, sharp, excellent value for the money.
Cons:
None. What I would have to say it is because it is not an 2,8...

I already have it since more than two years and I used it in mountains, caves and a lot of different outdoor places. Didn't noticed any dust inside, or something to bather me. I've been very enthusiast when I purchased it and I'm still a fan of this lens, so I come again with a review. Almost all my landscape pictures on my site
http://sanduloiu.ro/en/home
are taken with the 17-40 which is always in my bag, even if I'm more a telephoto person. Even the O-ring on the attaching rail is a very good thing and I have to say that I didn't noticed on my other L lenses, like 70-200 f4 and 300 f4... Not the same bokeh like 2,8, but that's lghter, cheaper, so depends what you need.

Pros:
Cons:

I will not going to quote again the lens in any way, for not changing the results, but I feel the necessity to come again here and express the enthusiasm for the lens. I do use it with a Kenko DG Pro 300 1,4x and the results are just extremely satisfatory. Some of them could be viewed at http://sanduloiu.ro/en/home
Strongly recommend this lens! You'll not going to regret the purchase.

Canon EOS 7D

Review Date: Mar 16, 2011 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 10

Pros: Excellent built, fast and accurate AF, good images.
Cons:
None so far.

Well, before buying it I've red some of the reviews here, especially the negative ones and I was quite disappointed, at a moment thinking not going to buy it. But, being adviced by a friend who owes the 7D among some other cameras, I bought it about a month ago and I'm happy with it.
I'm still on a learning curve because this machinery is a LOT different than my previous 40D. I took each type of autofocusing, for example and tested it and just after jumped to the next mode. You have to "train" your mind and hand to became used with all the new features.
There are a lot of new features which -if you don't pay attention to- can generate an unhappy feeling due to some imperfections. So, the instruction book has to be read attentively, it's all there! I still have it in my photobag, which never hapent before with any camera.
I also bought a silicon antischock case, even if the camera is so solid and well built. I do mainly outdoor photography, so it is very usefull for this kind of work, at about 25 Euro...
Oh! And my recommendation for those who would like to buy the 7D, never to compare its' pictures, with a 5DII ones'. You can't compare the images taken on a crop senzor with a those taken on full frame. It's like comparing apples with dates...
Some new pictures with the new toy are on www.sanduloiu.ro

Pros: Lightweight, sharp at any aperture, easy to shoot handheld. Good quality optics.
Cons:
None so far...

Just bought it for our photo club in Pitesti, Romania. I've tested it on the river taking pictures of birds and I'm very pleased of it. Easy to shoot handheld, AF is quite fast, but I use it with a 1,4x teleconverter and I know it slows the lens' speed. It seems to be quite well built, so it will be on the field, working, a lot of time.
Evene if I bought it from Romania, meaning all the EU taxes so it became more expensive, my price rating was 9 because the original US price is very good, but hardly to touch for us.

Review Date: Nov 29, 2010 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 10

Pros: Durable, fast focusing, reliable, sharp.
Cons:

I've bought it second hand, more than a year ago. It had 2k at that moment and now it approaches 20k. I really have no complain about it! I use it with 17-40L and 70-200L and the results are great. I shoot mainly outdoors, landscapes or animals and you can check the results on my site www.sanduloiu.ro

Pros: sharp, good colours, no distortions
Cons:
none so far...

Well, I finally managed to get it! And after a short period of using it, I can say that I'm happy with this lens. Together with 70-200 f4, I think it is one of the few bargains from Canon, just to keep you "hooked" on. It's really a good tool!!!

Review Date: May 19, 2009 Recommend? no | Price paid: $625.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: Fast AF, very sharp and vivid colours. Lightweight and though good build quality.
Cons:
None. I would say "no IS" but that is another product I couldn't afford at this moment.

I purchased this lens in april and I already used it in field, photographing birds, on my 40D. Last week I went in Danube Delta which is the last unspoiled wetland in Europe, where I know a white pelican colony of about 300 individuals. As I was approaching through the mud, mosquitos and vegetation, I checked for the "last" time all the camera parameters, and I succeed about 50 shots which really enchanted me. I've been disappointed to see that I didn't take care of ISO, so in the middle of a very bright day I've shot with ISO 800. But at home, on computer, everything was very good. Hard to describe the difference between last year shot when I used a 100-400 mm 4,5-5,6 Soligor. Lots of feather details even it were about 80 meters to the pelican group. I strongly recommend it...

Pros: Great price, great in low light, lightweight
Cons:
Cheap build, but what should you expect for this money?!

I've bought this lens some months ago and I'm happy with it. I don't use 50 mm too often, but the results are good. Very sharp from 2-2,2 onwards and I've taken some amasing mountain sunrises in low light what really made me feel that the money weren't spent in vain.
Go for it, buy it and keep it in your bag because it won't take much space or add weight!
