I brought lens with my first canon DSLR 400D several years ago (instead of the kit lens) and this is a really good walk around, all-rounded lens with a crop body.
Many people compare this lens with 16-35L f2.8, I think unless you shoot a lot of indoor subjects with low light or architecture, this is the lens for you. f4 is pretty enough for day light and landscape capture.
I use mostly the wider end of this lens after I brought my 5D mark II and my 35L f1.4. In terms of sharpness and bokeh quality, of course 35L is the winner, yet from aperture f5.6 onwards, the quality of this lens is comparable to the 35L.

Sharpness, color, contrast, AF, size & weight, built, IS, serves as macro and tele, price.

|
Cons:

Image quality in the tele range is not as wonderful as in the macro range.

This is a wonderful lens! The color, sharpness, bokeh and contrast is at least on par with my other L primes (35L and 200 f2.8L)!
The IS of this lens is REALLY useful, I can shoot macro in most situations (sunny and cloudy, except dim light) with good results, without using a flash or a tripod.
It rocks when you use it to shoot macro movies, especially on windy days. With the full shooting range (from macro to 100 tele) it works almost like a zoom! You can get really decent portraits and landscapes from this lens, too! It serves really well as an all-rounded lens. The built is solid, the size is small and the weight is light!
Highly recommended.

The range of this lens is perfect on my full frame camera Canon 5D mark II, it serves really well as a walk around lens, for it's nice range, weight & size, especially for landscapes and snaps.
The color of this lens is really good, bokeh is nice when taking close up on the tele range. The sharpness of this lens is pretty good, too. The built is solid, AF is fast...on par with my Canon 17-40mm f4L zoom lens. The build-in IS comes in handy in some low-light situation, such as shooting stills in the museum where no flash is allowed.
I brought it as the kit lens with 5D2, so the price is comparably more reasonable.
This lens is overall a VERY GOOD performer in many aspects, it can take EXCELLENT landscapes, too. However, this lens does not shine in low light situations, and the picture quality (e.g. bokeh, DOF) is no way comparable to those canon L primes with larger aperture, such as my Canon 35L and 200 2.8L.
I use this lens mostly for outdoor video taking, thanks for it's great range! I highly recommend this lens for video taking.

AF performance in low light.

This is a very good lens which priced reasonably. It is a light and compact lens, the built is decent but not great.
I suppose my copy of this lens is a sharp one, but it is not as sharp as my Canon EF 35mm f1.4L (which is very sharp from f1.4) until stopped down to f2.8. The color it rendors is not as vivid as my 35L, yet it is natural and pleasing in my eyes.
It is an excellent portrait lens with my crop body Canon 400D (Rebel XTi), and it is also a wonderful walk around lens with my Canon 5D mark II.
The downside of this lens is the AF performance - it hunts in low light situations. If you don't mind using menu focus in low light shooting, then it is not a really big issue for you.
The picture quality of this lens really impressed me. I own other Canon L zoom lenses, such as Canon EF17-40mm f4L and EF 24-105mm f4L, this lens out performed or on par with my L zooms in terms of image quality.

This is a VERY SHARP lens, even at 1.4. I love it's range, when used with a full frame.
I also have a canon 50mm f1.4, which is also one of my favorite lens, I have to admit that the 50mm is no way comparable to 35L's sharpness until it stopped down to f2.8.
The color and saturation is also awesome! I don't have to do any PS work for over 90% of the photos taken with this lens!
