Pros: Sharp, even wide open at 200mm. Well made. Weight and balance are ideal for handheld shooting with an EOS20D.
Cons:
Lens hood seems fragile.

I can shoot all day with this lens without tiring. I bought the separate tripod collar but haven't used it once. It balances nicely on the EOS 20D. Zoom and focus rings are right where they belong. I used to have to switch to a 300mm prime on my film camera to get the same reach and image quality. The 70-200f4 on an EOS20D is a lighter combination and handles better. I routinely violate the 'one over effective focal length' shutter speed rule and still get sharp pictures. which is something I could seldom get away with when using my film camera and 300mm.

It's by far the best value in the "L" lens line. There are times when I'd like to have the speed of the f2.8 version of this lens, but for me, giving up one f-stop in return for the savings in size and weight of the f4 lens was a good trade.

I haven't experienced any of the 'back focus' issues that some reviewers have reported. Autofocus is fast and precise.
