Tamron 28-300MM F/3.5-6.3 XR Di LD VC AF

28-300vr
Review Date: Sep 8, 2008 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 9

Pros: Sharp and colorful throughout range, on a Canon DSLR with 1.6 multiplication factor (which means using the more central area of the lens). VC seem very positive.
Cons:
Slow autofocus.

A great performer as an all-purpose lens. Typically, for long zoom ranges, I prefer to manually focus.

Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM

70-300_isusm
Review Date: Nov 29, 2006 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $560.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: Excellent resolution and color, even at 300 mm
Cons:

Excellent throughout zoom range. So good at 300mm that I find it useful even for extreme close-ups on insects and small wildlife. (The close-ups are subsequently cropped and enlarged with image editing/enlargement software to produce amazing clarity.)

Heartily recommend this lens for the casual/amateur nature photographer
