Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM

Review Date: Aug 19, 2008 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $975.00 | Rating: 9

Pros: Everything exceept IS and weight.
Cons:
Variations on quality control of different copies

Solid performer. Only issue with this lens is its variations of performance on different copies. I went through 3 different copies and all three performed differently. My last one was the best out of three.

Its strength shows at 35-50mm range where it is better than any other lenses at f 2.8. at 70mm it is disappointing somewhat but still good enough.

Since this lens is quite old in design, I am waiting for IS version to see if Canon will ever come out with IS version.

24-105L is sharper in corner but with f 4.0, images doesn't stand out like 24-70L.

Pros: Sharp throughout the range. f 2.8. Solid Build.
Cons:
Soft at extreme end. Vignetting with hood attached.

I have the lens for a month now and it is better than 17-40L that I had before which I sold it 6 months ago. Its sharpness is excellent in center but at extreme end it is soft. I got this because of better image quality improvement on corners from Version 1. Distortion is not bad for a zoom lens.

Main issue with this lens is the vignetting at wide end. Even without filter and hood, it shows even when I stop down several stops. But in real photos it is not that bad.

In all, this is a must have lens for Canon FF users for landscape. It performs better than any other UWA zooms or prime in my opinion. Unless you are into alternative MF primes.

Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM

EF10-22
Review Date: Dec 10, 2007 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $625.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: Very sharp through out the range. Even corners are decent. Good color and contrast. A must have for crop body.
Cons:
None.

A very good lense indeed...... I have been using 17-40L for WA but felt limited all the time. So decision between 5D and this lense was hanging in my mind for some time and finally decided to try this lense out before I buy FF camera.

I was very surprised by this lense. Remarkable lack of distortion @10mm is amazing. Very sharp center and decent corner sharpness brings smile on my face when I see my prints.

10mm brings whole new world in your vision.

Only drawback on this lense. Starting f3.5 is too slow for me to use this lense indoor. I wish Canon to make 10-22mm f2.8 version. I definitely will buy one.

Canon EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM

Review Date: Dec 4, 2007 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $400.00 | Rating: 9

Pros: Range, Range, Range...... Too convenient for crop Camera!
Cons:
Distortion @17mm.

Even though this lense performs the worst in all my lense collections, I find myself using this lense more and more simply because of convenience. My 24-70L is in my bag most of time ever since I got this lense.

In no way this lense is comparable to my 24-70L but for $400, it does the job most of time.

Only thing that I can complain about this lense is distortion at 17mm. It is the worst. I say becuase I have 17-40mm & 10-22mm also. But this is a minor complain.

In all, I love this lense for the price, range it covers, and it's capability to produce decent images.

Pros: You can do it all!!!!! Image quality is up there to L standard. Focus & IS is the best among all L lenses that I tried.
Cons:
Very heavy!!!!! Expensive to buy and expensive to repair!!!!

I had this lense for 1.5 years now. I really love this lense. I just took this lense only for my recent vacation. Despite some negative reviews about IQ on this lense. So far, this lense produced some amazing shots.

I had to take this lense back to Canon recently because of manual focusing ring issue and I guess ,because of the price of this lense, they charged $299 for repair.

But still, this will be the one if I were to keep only one lense.
