This was one of two lenses that I had wanted for a while (the other being the EF135 f/2 L). Whilst I have the focal length covered with my 70-200 I still was interested.
In terms of speed and focusing it's great also being lightweight and portable it's not that noticeable carrying as a 2nd or 3rd lens.
Price paid was £629 (website only seems to work with $) but it was worth it - I'm still looking to build up my prime collection with the 135, but that can wait a while.

Super sharp lens across the range. Coming from a 24-105 f/4 L the operation of the lens wasn't a problem. Lens hood is similar to the 24-104 with the addition of a release button. Cost wasn't great in the UK at £1749, but I purchased it with £235 cash back.
Overall very early days with the lens, but I'm really pleased with the performance.

Overall very pleased with this extender. Currently i can only use it with my EF70-200 f/4. It drops a stop down to f/5.6 but it the lens is still very usable at this aperture.

The price quote above is a rough conversion of GBP to USD. The actual price I paid was £201.50 from Calumet.
To answer a question below the recent edition of EOS magazine had a correction stating that the 1.4EX works with the new 70-200 f/4 IS lens works with all Canon Extenders (the previous edition claimed it didn't).
Conclusion:
Superb accessory. Might not get a great deal of use but for a relatively low(ish) cost your get an extra .4 of a lens.

Hood, would've been nice to have a built in one like the 300mm. No tripod ring supplied. Apparently not weather sealed (ooops, still works though after using it is bad rain!).

I was initially hesitant about this purchase as my previous telephoto zoom was pretty poor (80-200 kit lens from Eos 500). After reading here and subsequently using the lens I can recommend it.
Lack of IS (at the time the IS version wasn't out) does make it a little tricky to use in bad light. But other than that i've got no complaints really.
Not a big fan of the lens hood, though it can be reversed and fitted to the lens for storage.
Probably one of the cheapest 'L' lenses you can buy, cheap on cost, not on quality.
