Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM

Review Date: Jul 22, 2013 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $650.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: Sharp, light weight, excellent contrast.
Cons:
Price

This is a awesome lens with excellent sharpness wide open, improving to being super sharp at f/4. The IS is quiet, though audible. IS works well, having hand-held to 1/2 second. The AF is fast. The weight and size work well in its favour to being a walkaround lens on crop and full frame bodies.

Pros: Superb sharpness, colour, AF...everything about this lens is top notch
Cons:
Nothing

Superb colour, super sharp, no CA whatsoever, fast AF (can't imagine it being faster). What a lens!

The weight is perfect, balances very well on a 1D2. Very easy to hand hold. IS works very well.

The lens takes both 1.4x and 2x Canon teleconverters very well. The sharpness and colour are maintained with the 1.4x. Stopping down a third of a stop with the 2x results in increased sharpness from the very usable images when used wide open.

Can't see what can be improved with this lens. Little wonder this lens is regarded as amongst the very best ever made.

Pros: Build quality, colour rendition, sharpness
Cons:
None

I bought this lens 2.5 years ago as a standard walk-around zoom for the 20D (1.6 crop). Since then, this lens is also my walk-around for the 1D2 (1.3 crop). The lens is sharp wide open (2.8) and gets much, much sharper when stopped down 1/3 stop. The colour rendition is great. The lens feels solid. I haven't found any reason to replace this with the 16-35 II.
