Sigma 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM

Review Date: Jun 2, 2009 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 9

Pros: image and build quality, wonderfull bokeh
Cons:
Price for a sigma, and i had to try 3 before i got a good one

Loved the image quality from day one, but not so the focus, it was "all over the place", front, back, you name it, but after the third copy (bought recently 103xxxx serial), the focus is much better, not perfect, but at 1.4 the canon is also not 100% all the time.
For me it is the alternative tot the 1.2L (not the Canon 50 1.4, i think that is an "old design" lens, which should be upgraded as soon as possible.
Ps, i use it on a Canon 5DmkII

Pros: Super on 5D, even better on 5DmkII Range range range.... The pro one lens solution.
Cons:
Stille the same as i previously stated, price and weight

This is still (and again) my favorite piece of glass, it surely is better than my 100-400L, (sharpness, stabilisation also better, and focusspeed) and i feel it can rival the 24-105L. So all these people saying that 24-105 + 100-400 is a better combo, be carefull what you say without trying.
My believe is, that if more people had acces to this lens, more people would appreciate it.
What i don't understand is the low figures it gets at the photozone on 5dmkII fulframe test. I was affraid reading this test, but my findings are totaly different.
I would rate it 10 now

Pros: hsm, price, range on FF, lightweight
Cons:
Soft!! Vignetting

Just had this lens to test it out. It could get it real cheap. Well, i don't want it, even for free!! It is incredible soft until f:8, vignetting on 5d is huge.
Maybe it is better on 1.6 crop, and for a low price it is maybe then acceptable?
I also used the 15-30 ex dg, and that lens is really 10x better!
I heard the 17-35 2.8-4.0 ex hsm DG version is better, but i would not buy without proper testing!

Pros: Range, sharp, good colors, good IS
Cons:
Weight, price

This is the nec plus ultra for zoom lovers, gives you L quality in terms of build and image quality. No more choises to be made, just this lens, and 95% of the shots are covered.
I use it on my 5d, and it is as good as that lens, ofcourse primes or 3x zooms are a tad better, but this one is still very good. I only try to keep it above wide open (f5.6-f8) at 28mm and 300mm, they are the weak spots. But with IS you can go quite low in speed.
Only the weight is a problem, but i get used to it (the bag is empty now, so is the wallet!)
I think this lens gets bashed to often, by people who do not use it, and assume that a 11x zoom is only average (like sigma and tamrons)
