Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM

Pros: Focal range, AF speed, build quality
Uneven performance, IQ @ 300MM

When this lens was announced I knew I had to have one. For my motorsports needs it seemed to be the perfect lens as far as size and focal length so I bought one. After using it at 3 race weekends I ended up selling it. I did get some great shots with it but the performance seemed very uneven. As fast as the focus motor is, I had a large number of OOF pics, far more then with my 70-200, 300, or 400. In some lighting color was washed out badly, and the pics in many cases seemed not to be very "crisp". Perhaps the world of motorsports is not for this lens as I did get some nice shots away from the track but its not what I bought it for. So for me, its back to my 70-200 F/4 and 300 & 400 primes.....I'm very dissapointed, perhaps I got a dog and you'll do better.

Pros: Excellent IQ, light weight, fast focusing.

Superb lens, fast focusing, excellent image quality, nice and light, easy to carry and use. I was tempted by the lure of the 2.8 version and found a great deal on Ebay and bought one after selling my F4. After lugging that 2.8 brick of a lens around for 4 days at a race weekend I compared the photos to the many I had taken with my F4 and found no difference whatsoever. The 2.8 went back out on Ebay and another F4 took its place in my bag never to leave again! This is the best lens you can put in the bag if you have no need for the 2.8 aperture.

Pros: Excellent IQ, fast focusing, build quality.
Weight, didn't notice any IQ difference to my F4 version.

I use my telephotos for auto racing 95% of the time, was using an F4 version of this lens and loved it. Had a chance to buy a 2.8 version on Ebay for a good price and went for it. I sold my F4 and took the 2.8 to the Petit Le Mans race weekend for 4 days, shot about 1400 pics with it and after comparing them to previous pics taken with the F4 version I couldn't justify the higher cost and weight of the 2.8 so I put it back on Ebay and bought another F4! If you need the low light capability of the 2.8 then go for it, otherwise you are lugging around a brick of a lens for no good reason as the F4 version does everything exactly the same.

Pros: Easy to handle, IS works great, crisp image quality
The AF works fine but could be a bit faster

I purchased this lens to use at auto racing events. This past week from Oct. 3 -Oct. 6 I used it at the Petit Le Mans held at Road Atlanta in Georgia. I took about 600 pictures in the 3 days and came up with about 350 very nice photos. If that doesn't sound like a good ratio of keepers, keep in mind that the cars are traveling upwards of 180 mph depending on where you are shooting and there are some wasted shots. I am very pleased with the results, the lens locks on and tracks well but could focus a bit faster. Colors and sharpness are excellent and the lens feels right on my Rebel XTi. I would highly recommend this lens to anyone needing this focal length.
