Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II

Review Date: Nov 19, 2005 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 10

Pros: Best lens you can buy for its price! Image qulity is in the "L" class! Price
For its price... non!

This is Canon's cheapest lens, but don't let the price fool you!
This a great glass in a poor body!
Optical quality is as sharp as you can get, with great contrast and color satyration. Amax. F/1.8 is great!
Other then that (witch is the most important...) AF is noisy and slow; body is complitly made of plastic; min. focusing distance 45cm, so it's not that good for Macro (but a simple cheap extention tube corrects this when needed!)

Imaily use this lens for portrais, low light situations (e.g. concerts) with excelent results!, and macro shooting by using it with extention tubes!

I realy think that this lens is a "must" in EVERY photographers camera bag!

Canon EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM

Pros: Excelente zoom range fora walk arround lens!!! Is realy works well!!! Good optical quality! FTM focus.
Not "L" quality built. Some image distortion when at 17. Price

I have had this lens for a couple of months now and I love it! I baught it as a walk arround lens as I didn't like the results with the kit lens taht came with my 350D... and it was a great improvement!
Built qulity is not "L" but is realy nice. FTM focus is a plus in my book! Image quality is verry good , just a bit softer and less contrasty than the L lenses, but if your not a pro shhoter than this is a minor issue as the results you get arerealy good!
IS is a dream.. it realy works like a dream! Focus is fast and sharp!
There is nioticeble distortion at 17mm... but it is expected given the zoom range! There is good control over flair and gosting but tht is still some CA.
To me the only major con is its price... I think it is to expensive, costing more than my Canon EF 70-200 f/4 L lens.

Overall... I lithis lens and recomend it to all amateurs looking for a great walk-arroud lens.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM

Review Date: Nov 18, 2005 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 10

Pros: Great "L" quality optics and built... Light weight... good zoom rage on a "non full-frame" Dig.SLR.
Color... not Black :o(

What can I say that hasnīt allready been said?... well not mutch!!
I was devided between this lens and the EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM and am realy gglad I went with this one!!!
Ok so the 70-300 has IS and a longer zoom range... big deal! IS is allways nice to have but the extra 100mm don't bother me at all with the image quality I get out of the L lens I can crop down without loss of quality and compensate this diference easely!
The 70-300 built quality is nower near the L lens, same as the optic quality (despite some creatics one the net saying that their same or that the 70-300 is better... it is all BS, at least with the ones I tested!).
As for the f/2.8 models (Sigma and Canon) image quality are the same but if your not shooting in low light conditions go for the f/4... it is mutch lighter to walk arround with and less expensive!
I truly recomend this lens to any Pro or advanced amateur!
