Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM

Review Date: Dec 16, 2004 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 10

Pros: Sharp wide open, solid as a rock, 1:1 lifesize, quiet as a mouse.
AF hunts in low light

They should really put a red ring on this lens and call it the 100 f2.8L, but I guess they would have to charge more. It is build like a rock This is the only lens I've used that is truely sharp wide open. The focus is fast in good light, but in low light/ low contrast conditions it will hunt and sometimes not lock focus, but the outstanding manual focus ring more than makes up for that. I couldn't rate this lens anything but a 5. I told my wife I was going to sell this lens in order to pay for the 50 1.4, which for my purposes would get more use. What she doesn't know is I lied!

Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM

Review Date: Dec 16, 2004 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $309.00 | Rating: 8

Pros: Useable @1.8, sharp past f2
Needs ring usm, micro usm doesn't compare IMO.

First this lens is much better than the 50 1.8II. the focus is much more accurate at f1.8 than the 50 1.8II ever could hope to be. My 50 1.8II front focused wide open consistently as do many. Focus with this lens and the 20d is very accurate. There is no comparison at f1.8 between the two lenses, save yourself $70 and shell out for the 1.4. At f1.4 it is soft, but that is expected and I new that going in. I've actually got some good shots handheld at f1.6, but with the narrow! DOF I think i just got lucky. :^)

Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM

Review Date: Dec 11, 2004 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $1,089.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: low cost, low weight, sharp, focuses faster than any other lens under $2,000
they've been covered

Everything has been said about this lens. It focuses so fast that it actually jerks in your hand. It's like a dog always wanting to please, I can almost here it saying "I can focus faster".

the only con for me is the minimum focus distance of 3.5m, but since it excells in every other area I overlooked this and gave it an excellent.

Can you tell I love this lens?

You can see some pics taken with this lens and the digital rebel or canon 20d at my pbase site.
