Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 EX APO IF HSM

Review Date: Feb 22, 2005 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 8

Pros: f2.8 for under 600, looks better than the f4 canon that people compare it to, not white so does not attract attention. petal hood if your vain. sharp images from f4 up. f2.8 requires focus to be spot on. fast focus. contains tripod ring unlike the f4 canon
does not have the build quality of the canon but then your not likely to be using this lens in the rain or not taking care of it.

I choose this lens over the canon f4 70-200L and I'm glad I did. te extra stop is a god send. lens is heavy to use but then any other 70-200 f2.8 lens is heavy. I have this lens on my 20D most of the time. zoom ring bit stif but nothing too bad. nice finish on the lens too.

Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM

Review Date: Jan 13, 2005 Recommend? no | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 4

Pros: wide range, IS price now quite cheap
lens is poor over 200mm, not fast, slow focus, tends to hunt

if you want a zoom with IS then find one used just don;t expect sharp images above 200 or when wide open.

Canon EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM

Review Date: Jan 13, 2005 Recommend? yes | Price paid: Not Indicated | Rating: 6

Pros: very good range, IS, nice balance with 20D
price, only f4 when wide open, does seem to be a lack of sharpness with my lens even when using a tripod compared to my 18-55 EFS

Without really thinking I bought this lens as part of the 20D kit. with hindsight I would have bought the 18-55 kit and bought the sigma 70-200 f2.8 (well I just have). for the price your paying it's not worth it. ok it's got IS and it is a nice lens just not worth 400 UK. knock 100 off the price and its worth it. having used the 18-55 on a 300D I liked it so would use it again
