Canon EF 28-105 F/3.5-4.5 II USM

ef_28-105_35
Review Date: Mar 7, 2007 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $150.00 | Rating: 7

Pros: Light enough to carry all day, sharp, IS, good zoom range.
Cons:
Image quality suffers at long end, build could be better

This was my first on my Canon 30D and it worked well enough at the start. However when I started getting into my favourite photography (dawn and dusk HDR) I found that image quality suffered from quite a deal of noise at the longer end (80mm-105mm).

Therfore I'll be setting this lens aside and keeping it more for general use travel photography as opposed to my more serious photographic pursuits. I've actually decide to purchase the 50mm 1.8 MII as the replacement and my standard lens and will use the 70-200mm L F4 to cover the longer focal length which this lens did till now.

However all in all, if you want general purpose lens this one really does quite a decent job and doesn't cost a fortune.

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM

Review Date: Mar 6, 2007 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $500.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: Solid build, pin sharp, great macro, fast to focus, great bokah
Cons:
none

This was my second decent lens for my Canon 30D and I fell in love with it, straight out the box. With a bit of practice this lens takes superb macros and doubles as a solid telephoto prime.

I seriously could not find anything to fault with this lens, sure the 180mm Macro has better magnification but it's also almost double the size.

If you want a decent macro you can not go past this lens!

Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM

EF10-22
Review Date: Feb 25, 2007 Recommend? | Price paid: $675.00

Pros: excellent lens, sharp and top quality make
Cons:
would like to see an L version

This lens is a thing of sheer beauty. If I was stuck on a deserted island and had to spend an entire year with only one lens, the 10-22 would be it.

There is nothing really in this class that competes so kudos for Canon for making such a great landscape lens for all us HDR landscape nuts.

See some of my images taken with it

The only thing I can think of improving is possibly releasing an L version of this lens and I would happily upgrade for the peace of mind of tight seals and more robust body.

Otherwise if you want a wide angle, forget the 17-55mm, 17-85mm , 17-40mm etc etc, this lens blows all those ones away.

Happy shooting when you do get one Smile

Focus and zoom rings could be sealed, L lens anyone ?

Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM

EF10-22

Pros: - great perspective and not a great deal of distortion at long end on 1.6 - sharp images - crisp and fast autofocus - ergonomic design, sits very well on my camera
Cons:
- the seals could be a bit better (L version anyone ?)

I'm in love with my 10-22. This is the by far my most favourite lens, often staying on the camera longer then envisaged. I'm extremely happy with the sharpens and the quality of the images this has produced and would never hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking at a versatile ultra wide angle application lens. Sure it's not as versatile as the 17-55mm but this is a purpose built wide angle lens, not a wide to tele and the extra 7mm really does make a difference in the style of the images you can take with it. Also while reading some comments in here I notice a few complaints about build quality and I would have to say that this has to be one of the best non L lenses in terms of build that I came across. Sure if an L version came out, with tighter seals on focus and zoom rings I would be willing to pay the difference. However as this is not an L lens I still think that the construction and the build are second to none and represents great value for money.

Following are a few images that I shoot with this lens.
