Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 XR Di Zoom AF

28-75mm
Review Date: May 10, 2005 Recommend? yes | Price paid: $370.00 | Rating: 10

Pros: Image quality, size, f2.8, full frame, warranty
Cons:
AF speed not as fast as USM

A jewel of a lens! Had the 24-70L first and read all of the rave reviews of the Tamron. It wasn't too pricey so I wanted to give it a go and went ahead and ordered it. After a month or so of living with both lenses and putting them both through a number of controlled side by side comparisons I could not distinguish the Tamron from the Canon which is saying a lot for the little guy. Sharpness, color, saturation, contrast all very close, almost indistinguishable. Most pictures showing a difference were due to slight focus variations. Both are awesome midrange zooms. I liked the size/weight factor of the Tamron and so in the end I stayed with the Tamron (the only 3rd party M. lens in my bag). Highly recommended.

Pros: image quality, speed, cost, compact size
Cons:
AF a bit noisy, not as contrasty as L

Love this lens. THe focal lenght is good for indoor shots. THe 50mm prime is a bit long. F2 gives me the speed I need for available light photography. Very sharp and chontrast is very good, just under L performance. AF is fast but a bit noisy at times, though it does not bother me. The f1.4 version is slightly sharper and a bit more contrasty but if you don't need f1.4 then this lens is a quality alternative.
