Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM

ef10028lmisu_586x225
Review Date: Mar 24, 2010 Recommend? | Price paid: $884.00

Pros: Relatively small/light body, fast/quiet AF with 1:1 (1x) macro capabilities - and HIS (Hybrid Image Stabilization). Build quality overall is very good - and includes weather sealing. I like the smooth, straight design of this lens - including the flush-mounted switches.
Cons:
long hood

If you have a full framed body - buy it. It is on our 5D Mk2 75% of the time. The focal lenght is great.....
A 100mm macro lens with a relatively wide aperture, superb image quality, fast AF and an impressive IS implementation has a huge number of uses in addition to macro photography - including portraits, landscapes and indoor sports. Additional uses make it easier to justify the purchase cost of the lens - and the space it takes in the bag. Color and contrast are great. Bokeh is excellent - the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 L IS USM Macro Lens creates a very high quality foreground/background blur. OOF (Out of Focus) highlights are rendered very smoothly.

Pros: This lens is sharp; great smooth bokeh; light to travel; 100mm on full frame in my opinion is a great focal length; AF is fast, quiet and accurate; Canon Hybrid Image Stabilizer "helps" with hand-held macro
Cons:
Long Hood

This is just not a macro lens. For botanical-landscape photography - it is on my 5D MkII most of the time.

Buy it - you will have more "fun" with this lens than any other.

Canon EOS 50D

Review Date: Mar 1, 2009 Recommend? | Price paid: $1,100.00

Pros: New DIGIC 4 Image Processor; Clear View LCD 920,000 dots Monitor; Live View Function with Face Detection Live Mode; Quick Mode AF, Live Mode AF; AF Microadjustment; ISO capabilities up to 12800; HDMI Output; Lens Peripheral Illumination Correction ; Multi-controller (joystick) Quick Control Screen Illumination Correction; New Self-Cleaning Sensor Unit
Cons:

We are posting this review to give another opinion as to the performance of the Canon 50. There is NO way the 50D should be rated a "6". We have both 40D and a 50D bodies and have all L lens except for our 50mm 1.4. The 50D is sharper than my 40D and the images are not soft. The images are no more noisy than my 40D. As sensor density increases, so too does noise at very high ISO settings. However, the few time you have to use high ISO settings to even get an image, just reducing the 50D image to the pixel dimensions of the 40D results in very similar noise levels and the 50D retains better sharpness and details. The 50D AF System - AF Points (1 Cross Type) + 6 AF Assist Points is very similar to the 5d Mark II. The DIGIC 4 Image Processor; LCD 920,000 dots Monitor, New Self-Cleaning Sensor Unit and Lens Peripheral Illumination Correction alone are worth the upgrade. The 50D is the best Canon DSLR for the money.

Pros: LCD 920,000 Dot/VGA Resolution,, Build Quality, Image Quality, AF Microadjustment, Peripheral Illumination Correction, HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) Port, Quick Control Screen, Noise Reduction, Improved New Self-Cleaning, Quick Mode AF, Live Mode AF, and Face Detection Live Mode AF.

We have traded up from a Rebel XTi to a 40D and now have the 50D. Many have written the 40D a better body. Not true. If you are looking to trade up from the 40D or other D - do it. I am writting this review primarily because of comments such as: "The images I've gotten have been very noisy, and I only have L glass so I hoped that I wouldn't suffer the same soft images I kept hearing about, but I did." Not my 50D and I have all L glass. Or comments such as: " The AF system is nothing to write home about." The AF system of the 50D is basicly the same as the new 5D. If any have conerns about pixel peeping - "Reducing the 50D image to the pixel dimensions of the 40D results in very similar noise levels and the 50D retains better sharpness and details". This camera is the best for the buck.

Pros:
Cons:

That big decision: The 24-70 ("The Brick") or the newer 24-105 IS. I have researched for months and purchased both. The 24-105 is equal or better in everyway except moving objects in low light. The 10oz savings alone won me over. Purchase the 24-105 and then RENT the 24-70. You then will confirm you made the right choice. "........ optical quality of the Canon L-Series Lenses and a widely used range of focal lengths, the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens is one of the best and most popular Canon general purpose lenses made. The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens quickly became one of my favorites. If I had only one lens, this would be the one." The-Digital-Picture-Review.com
